Hi!

I have the Hurricane 550 XES PRO SE kit that is sold with carbon blades.

The pinion that is coming with that kit (at least with mine) is 15T and it was probably chosen to achieve a good head speed with the carbon blades. Do you think I have to change it for a smaller one to fly wooden blades?

I do not have a tachometer for now but I will order one soon. I have a Z20-980 motor and stock gears. Is it a good idea to buy smaller pinions along with the tach order? Which pinions should I buy exactly if I want a 14 or 13T? I do not really know which one I should buy.

Thank you

I would get a smaller pinion. The 15 is pretty high for your 980kv motor... it was meant for the stock 850kv motor.

Here are the figures:

850kv stock motor - 15t pinion - 2099 at 100% efficiency - 1889 at 10% drag

your 980kv motor - 15t pinion - 2420 at 100% efficiency - 2178 at 10% drag
980kv motor - 14t pinion - 2259 at 100% efficiency - 2033 at 10% drag
980kv motor - 13t pinion - 2097 at 100% efficiency - 1888 at 10% drag

Wooden blades are not usually factory rated for over 2000 HS - but I know some guys will take them up to 2100 - 2200 with the CNC grips.
