--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:)Hey all, Had some nice weather here this weekend and got some flying in so I thought I would post some impressions of some upgrades on my Diablo.
Ordered a new Scorpion motor because my original RCT motor was starting to show its wear. With well over 500 flights(mostly hovering/ learning) it was still making power, but I noticed my battery/ esc/ motor temps were increasing, and I was putting more drain on my batts. for the same amount of flight time. When the motor arrived(one day shipping. Awesome!) I was more than pleasantly supprised to find a beautiful set of carbon fiber main blades and the 220mm flybar.:happyd Visualy, these blades are flawless; The CF pattern is perfectly symetrical between both blades, the surface is smooth as glass, and the edges are well finished with no hint of edge flash or seams. Put them on the scale, and both blades were exactly 21.9 g each. Checked them for CG and they were both spot on, and when I checked them for balance they were perfect. That has never happened with any of the wood blades I use. I did'nt use any tracking tape on the blades as I had the tracking perfect from before, and quite frankly, they are just to pretty to put tape on. Bolted in the motor, blades and flybar, charged my batts. and went flying. What a HUGE difference. It felt like a completely different heli. First off, the Scorpion motor is awesome. Spool up was smooth and quiet, and for the same throttle curve, felt more powerful. The heli lifted at a lower stick, and did'nt seem to take as much stick to initiate FF. I'll have to tach it later, but it sure sounded like the headspeed was higher running the same 11t pinion as before. The blades performed stellar. Now, admittedly, I'm pretty much a nOOb. This is the first set of CF blades I have ever used, and I aint flying no "madd 3dz". My flying is mostly hovering and mild sport.(Fig.8's, medium FF circuts, stall turns and piro's) The thing I noticed most is how precise my moves got with these blades. You can feel the stiffness in these blades when you are flying. Turns and stops are much sharper, and it holds altitude like its on a stick. Tracking remained perfect. Hover stability improved with the 220mm flybar, and the cyclic response was smoother and faster in maneuvers without making the heli feel "twitchy". All in all, the combination of the motor, CF blades and longer flybar resulted in a more powerful, more stable, better controled heli that I felt more confident and relaxed flying. Additionaly, my motor, esc and batt temps went down and I was able to add 45secs. more of flight time even though I was flying more aggressively. Of course, it is no small bonus that all these upgrades are available from RCT. As with all thier products, the bang for the buck factor is about 2:1, and your heli remains 100% RCT, with thier legendary customer and product support. If you have been flying your Diablo or Skyshark for a while and are ready to take the next step in flying then I would highly recomend any or all of these upgrades.:YeaBaby: Personaly, I can't wait 'til these blades become mainstream, and if the line starts here, count me first and put me down for 2. Once again: "Thanx to Scott, and the rest of the crew at RCT for such a great heli that's a ton of fun to fly.":noteworthy Now, if i can just wipe this silly grin off of my face.

Just to let you know how awesome it is you got the blades gifted to you I agreed to review the blades and still paid most of what they will retail for if not all.

Mikey paid for the blades (since he mentioned he wanted some) but got the free 220mm flybar to test. He just hasn't received his credit card statement yet.

I got the new version Scorpion -8 V2 motor and will be running it with the same pinion and setup as before. I will link my review of the motor when completed. This will be comparing the V1 to the V2. No data logger stuff.

Then I will throw the blades on the heli with the new motor and throw it around some to see what I think. I will try to get someone to video me. If I don't take them out in my excitement they will be passed to Ah Clem for a very experienced review.

Maybe I can talk Jason Chow into putting on a show with my Sky Shark at the next FunFly and getting some video. Last time I asked him to fly my heli it did a weird 1/4 throttle open lock out on him and we had to grab it. So my chances of talking him into it again are pretty slim. :YeaBaby: Sorry Jason my bad! Stupid stator separation problem on the JGF500th which wouldn't have been so bad had I not ignored it and continued flying. I thought it was just my well used Flight Power though.. JGF put out a warning too but did I listen and take preventative measures? Nope. So unlike me too.

Anyway enough rambling time to look over my heli a little more before it's second maiden tomorrow. Hope you all are having fun with your RCT-450!

Mike

Edit: Just saw Scott's post. Ah well still cool to be one of the first to own them Mikey!

Edit Edit: That lock out bird was not the Sky Shark. That was me Trex 450.

Wait a sec I must be tired.

I said a 12T is the largest with the -8 V2 motor and I was wrong. I mounted the 13T in there just fine.

My apologies. I suppose it was a little unclear and I certianly did'nt mean to step on anyone's toes or steal thier show. The reason I was "pleasantly supprised" was because when I spoke to Scott and asked about the CF blades he alluded that he only had a limited amount of them and I was'nt sure if he would send them. There was no "agreement" between me and Scott. My only intent was to give something in return to Scott and the RCT crew in appreciation for the outstanding support they have given me, and to share information with my fellow RCT enthusiasts.

I wasn't mad I just thought you were a repeat customer and he threw them in. I was merely stating how lucky you were to get them for free. You are still lucky to have one of the first sets though!

Well I got the Sky Shark setup back up with all RC-TEK electronics. The Scorpion -8 V2 motor being the exception. I am starting out at 13T though I really want to see if I can snap my wood blades.

Try and get some pictures tomorrow before this Saturday as I plan to unleash the beastie for the first time. Not just a docile roll. Time to break this thing in!

I like this heli so much it's going to suck to crash it but I can't let myself care.

Like I said in my other posts, I think the BEC/ESC got to hot and shut down my rx. I installed a Common Sense 35A BEC/ESC and it's running very hot too. Do any of you run the Scorpion HK2221-8 motor? What BEC/ESC are you using and have you had any problems with it running hot? I'm wandering if I need to run a 45 amp BEC/ESC to keep it's temperature down and keep a steady flow of volts going to the rx?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am running the RCT-40A ESC and no my temperature seems fine. I am running the Scorpion -8 V2. Check your pinion to main gear gap that it is only about the width of a piece of paper. A lot of people actually use a piece of paper. Check for unnecessary drag and make sure you are running your tail belt too tight. Make sure your blades are tracking nicely and your dampers aren't worn.

Heli-Smith,

I'm trying to figure out if the BEC ESC I got witht he heli is a 35 or 40 Amp unit. How can you tell?

I am running the RCT-40A ESC and no my temperature seems fine.

If that's the RCT-40A(S), i.e. with the switching BEC, I would expect it to run cooler and put out more constant voltage. The stock ESC has a linear BEC, which has to burn off the voltage difference between the pack and the output as heat.

I just had an educational conversation with Scott. I thought the BEC/ESC that came with my sky shark was a 35 amp unit. Now I know it's not. LOL. So now I'm going to order up a 45 amp Scorpion Commander series ESC. Thank you Scott and everyone for being patient and answering my questions. I'm still a newbie! As long as there is someone to answer my questions I promise to have more.:YeaBaby:

Keep up the great work.

If it were I my first move would be to ask Scott at RC-TEK. Describe your ESC to him including the color of the board and heatsink.

scott@rc-tek.com

P.S. Small correction ...make sure you aren't running your belt too tight.

The tail belt seems to be alright. It bends when you push on it so I figure it has about the right tension on it. Is there a sure-fire, scientific method for adjusting the tail belt?

Ted

Loose
This method of running loose is not idler pulley friendly and I suggest you lose that idler pulley, screw and all. You run it pretty loose but just to the point where you can't hold the tail blades and make the belt slip with the main blades under a reasonable amount of pressure. Then tighten your boom block, boom brace and give it one more test. Running the belt on the loose side and no idler pulley gives you hundreds of flights...

Not so loose
Otherwise if you are going to run a pulley follow the push test.

I just reread the replies I had and obviously the HeliFreak refresh bug was tripping me up. I never seen some of those posts.

Let us know how that ESC works!

The ESC has shipped out and I should have it and be up and running this weekend. I'm sure I'll have a question or two and I'll be sure to let everyone know how it all turned out.
Thanks again.

I installed the esc last night. I programmed the settings for default. Everything on the heli seems to check out. The weather cleared out and we've got clear skies as far as they eye can see. Heck yeah, I was out flying! Being my second time flying outside I did fairly well at keeping the heli where I wanted it to be. I need more practice flying in a breeze/wind. As long as the weather holds, I'll be out there as much as I can.
Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions and information. It was all very usefull.

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Nice man great to hear it. I looked at those Scorpion ESCs' and boy are they pricey.

I am still rebuilding I need to go buy set screws. I think I spend more in gas running to the LHS then actually on parts. I need to move closer. :YeaBaby:
