are these two birds about the same size? is the hurricane going to be the trex500 's competition?

The Hurricane is bigger than the Trex500, the comparision is the Lipton and HDX500.

Trex 500 is a 500 MOTOR size, 400 - 450 mm blades.

Hurricane 550 is the same size as a .30 nitro heli using 475 - 550 mm blades.

Thanks,

I wonder if it would be a better choice to go from a rex450 to the hurricane. maybe the rex500 wont be that much of a diferance.

I have a Lepton and the difference is big. The Lepton's size really makes a difference and flies a lot bigger. It's still not a 30 size but then if you're going to get a 30, you might as well just get a TRex 600 because that size difference isn't all that much. The TRex 500 is a nice size in between the 450 and the 600. I have all 3 sizes (plus a 90).

I agree, I got a Quick of Japan EP8 (400mm blades) after having the Trex 450. VERY large in comparison. Felt huge when I first flew it.

The Hurricane as another step up, you definitely want to fly that one further away. :)

My Hurri (550mm) is only 13 ozs heavier than my Trex500esp. Power to weight ratio is a tad better on the Hurri (I believe). I use the same batts in both. I'm not doing 3D yet, but, it seems that the Trex is a bit snappier. Some will say the 550 isn't for 3D....I've seen vidios to the contrary. I do know, the Rex flys heavier....at least to me....and I'm running pretty big batts. The Hurri is quite a bit bigger....at least with the 550mm set-up.
I say get BOTH!!!

the 550 is no match for the 500. 2 different style helis alltogether

550 is more of a sport flier. finless hated his.

500 is a beast out of the box

I have owned a Trex 600 ESP and a fully blinged Hurricaine. Both are now gone from my fleet and replaced with a T-rex 500 ESP and a MSH Protos.

Reasons: Trex 600 is a great machine but its size means park flying is completely out of the question and its not really a 6S machine if you want to do any more more then basic sports flying.

Hurricaine does have a good power to weight and served me well but its overall engineering and quality are not as good as the Trex ESP range and always has a degree of slop in the control system no matter what you do with it.

MSH Protos. Light and powerful. Nicely engineered and very quite. Not too hard on packs unless you are a crazy 3Der.

Trex-500 ESP: My current favorite. Very solid machine and nicely engineered. No upgrades required. Its a bit on the heavy side but flies bigger then the Protos and in fact the size looks similar in the air to Hurricaine. I use the same packs in the Protos and get 6 1/2 minutes out of Protos and around 5 1/2 minutes out of the Trex-500 doing the same type of flying.
