View Full Version : Essential upgrades for Mini Titan

Hi all.
I am thinking of getting myself a Mini Titan.
I would be getting the kit with motor an ESC.
What are the essential upgrades needed to make this heli fly smoothly? I am still pretty much in the learning stages, just hovering around, so ballistic performance is not a requirement (yet).
I have read that the upper mixing arms flex quite a bit, causing problems with tracking, and it ia suggested to replace these with metal. Are there any other issues that I should take into consideration?
Also. are there any other forums besides helifreak that have a lot of support for the Mini Titan?
TIA

hey darryn
Ive got a titan and a trex se , personally i think the titan is slightly better, maybe its cause my trex has given me so much shite, but value for money its a great heli.
after an 'incident' i found that i could not get the heli to track right, this was because the main rotor hub got a very slight movement on the main shaft , so personally i think long term wise you would need to pretty much replace quite alot of the head with metal upgrades ... ive just finished fitting a metal head to my titan, and its completely transformed it, it feels great again.
hope the weather is good :D will be over soon for some sunshine

It depends on several factors
1. if you are new with heli - stick with standard
2.if you are seasoned - go for upgrades
3. if you can afford it - do 1 and 2 together irregardless of your capability.

It flys just fine out of the box. Upgrade it later on, while you're learning there's no need and little benefit. Buy an extra battery or two and get more flights, that will pay more dividends in the long run than any shiny parts.

My big problem right now is deciding if I should go with the stock ESC/motor or get something else. I've heard the motor is ok, but the stock wood blades heat it up a little excessively. What's your impression BH, go stock and grab some Align 325 Pro woodies and a set of spacers (PV0829)? Seems like a damned good price to me with the OBL 29/35-10H and the BLC-40, but then, if heat is a problem at a low skill level, it'll need replacing later. I hate buying twice. JGF 550TH and a CC45?

This is with the stock motor, esc, and blades.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=932 granted Bobby Smith was flying it and he can make pretty much anything look good.
The motor is around 140, the batteries 105 to 110, the ESC 120ish by IR gun.
I like the Radix carbons but I cant get them to track with the plastic head, even with spacers.

Thanks for that. Have you tried the metal mixing arms? Seems to be the "fix of the month".

Honestly, I've been so happy with it since the review I've been hesitant to mess with it.
FWIW its the only thing I've reviewed that I've kept.

Good to know. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me for setup tips.
I can't wait to get mine. I wonder if Mrs. Claus will let me order it before Christmas. :P

Finally had time to read the review and watch the video. Great job on both. I guess that settles the question of upgrading, I doubt I'd need more performance than that for a very long time. Good to see that the 18C FP Lites are a good choice, I was thinking of grabbing them.

I'm very happy with them.
People see that 18c and are like WHOA!?
But consider that the C rating is a factor of capacity, so the EVO 25 2170 pack 25 works out like this 2170 * 25 = 54.25 amps discharge, where on the 2500 pack its 2500 * 18 = 45 amps and we are running 35a speed controllers so the battery isn't the limiting factor.
Thanks for the kind words on the review.

Also, not sure if you've seen something like this before, if not you may want to try it. I had a brief discussion with the guys over at Ace Hobby, I was asking if they had an estimate on the release of the SE. Anyhow, I asked if TT was looking at changing the upper mixing arms to help get rid of tracking issues. I got this from one of the techs:
Hello To help with the tracking issue. You can put a extra spacer between the
dampner and the grip.this will take up some space and help with the
tracking
.Hope this helps ou out .

I took the route of upgrading part after part to get the blades to track perfectly. I worked my way up from the washout base up to the metal grips. While every part I replaced made a small difference in reducing the play in pitch, its was (yes you guessed it) the blade grips that made a huuuuge difference - virtually zero play.
I must say though that heli looks fantastic with a full metal head - especially if you mix up red and silver parts.
Because I recently also upgraded to an aftermarket carbon frame, carbon UC and boom (mmmmmm nice), I'm well on my way to having enough parts to build a second mini titan - wohoo :-). I'll have to post some pics sometime
I do agree though that the heli does fly very well without upgrades and I've had well over 100 flights on mine before deciding to upgrade.

Yep you should. Would love too see one blinged out. Although, personally I like the plastic frames.
