Started looking for a decent 12V supply now that I'm up to 4 Lipo chargers, and my bench supply is only good to a few amps... ATX power supplies have always been the best bang for the buck, so started browsing Newegg, till I saw this:

http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30242&stc=1&d=1194486139

Xion Supernova XON-600F14R-201 ATX12V 600W Power supply :YeaBaby:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817190012

$60 after mail-in rebate

2x 12V rails, @ 20A each
Plus some other voltages should you need them
Modular connectors = less clutter for your bench

If you need more power, there are models with up to 6x 12V rails @ 20A each, that offer the modular connectors, and pretty blue leds :smokin:

I'm going to order one of these, and make the following changes:

Remove ATX and 4-pin cable that usually goes to the motherboard
Connect green wire and GND to toggle switch to turn power supply on/off
Re-wire circular connectors for only +12V and GND, with Dean's 10-12 gauge 'wet-noodle' wire, with female banana plugs on ends
Find large aluminum carrying case, mount power supply to it, cut a fan hole, and install a foam filter.
Install wide pocket for cable storage
Cover bottom of case with velco ('hook side')
Mount other chargers to case with velcro
Use remaining velcro area to hold various batteries
If case is big enough, divide off and make foam cutout for DX7 transmitter
Install smoke detector inside case just to be safe

Did you ever use it? Great idea

Would definitely like to see some pics after you make the changes. Always looking for ways to maximize ( and consolidate ) the usefulness and safety of all things battery related. Keep us posted.

Wow, nice find.. Looks like that one only does 20 amps though, and the other one I linked to does 40. Still a good deal for most applications... My T-Rex 600 batteries (6s1p 5000mah) on my BalancePro charger take up to 15 amps by themselves (internal step-up converter turns 12V into ~22.2 volts @ 5 amps), and I'd like to do at least two of these batteries simultaneously, plus a 3s 2200 battery or two. This means that I'll need an ATX power supply around 600+ watts.

Yes, I'm only charging my t-rex-450 packs, and I only have 2 chargers... I may pick up another powerplant for the cellpro 10s when it comes out, but so far this one has been great for what I need.

The fact that it is already modded is awesome.... theone you found looks really nice, but those cables are not bananna plugs... which means it still needs to be modified. It would be really nice if you can get the bananna jacks in those illumanated jacks somehow... and it is definately a nice power supply.

Yep, I used my 3-amp lab supply for a while before I got my T-Rex 600... It charged up my 2200 3s packs with no problem.

You have a point... I have a complete electronics lab in my house, and always do my own cabling (i.e. shortening servo wires). Guess I forget sometimes that other people don't do this :thinking .. Personally I say pick up a good solder station, crimpers, heat gun, etc and do this stuff yourself. Your helis and charging stations will come out much better, and probably cheaper.

post some pics of your modding. I'm definitely going to need a better power supply.

you know I was thinking it might be easier to mod the cables rather than the box itself? What do you think?

I'm putting off buying it until next payday.. My checking account is still hurting after buying the T-Rex 600 and half of an ultralight airplane. I'll definitely post some pics when I'm done.

Yep, I'll be modding the cables, and also removing the ATX motherboard cable/connector completely. I'll probably add one banana jack to access the -12v (non-heli related stuff), and of course add a toggle switch to the 'soft start' green wire and ground.

got my power supply today from jacked up customs. Im charging my first cell pro 11.1v 3s 1350mah pack with the 4s cellpro. I plugged the cellpro in the first set of jacks and the power supply went into protection. WTF. After auto reset I switch two the middle jacks and it was fine. Is there something Im missing? Do the jacks provide the same power on each? I didnt see nothing in the manual.

Hi,

All jacks are protected as one meaning if any trip the Power Plant 620 into protect more they will all under go the same condition.
As the manual explains you should never plug your charger or any other compatible device in while the power supply is on. It will go into to protect mode 98% of the time.

What basically happened is when you plugged in your charger it went into protect mode. You need to give the power supply 5-10 seconds after flipping it off before you turn it back on. It was just timing that made it seem as though the middle jacks made a difference.

If you have any more issues are questions please feel free to contact are tech department via our website

very cool :) I still need to order mine... I originally said these things were $60 after mail-in rebate (now they're actually $40 after $70 rebate) -- but after reading the reviews closely, almost noone has received their rebate. A few people on Newegg actually filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau. As of right now, Xionusa has a rating of 'F'

"Our complaint history for this company shows that the business has not responded to customer complaints brought to its attention by the Bureau.

http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=100051 861

So basically if I buy one, it's $114.99 the way I look at it. Still a nice power supply, but isn't as cheap as I originally thought :(

I just placed an order for the "Jacked up Customs" unit.. Hopefully it'll arrive fairly soon.. I know it's gonna be tough with the holiday shipments..

I am using my truck to charge my batteries with my TP1010/210 combo for the time being..
