I am certain that this has been asked and answered many times but I can't find it.

You want to use gear to control your gyro gain instead of your gyro menu?

You program gear=gear, and use endpoints to adjust. +% will be HH, and - will be rate mode.

Horizon just replaced my DX7. I am programming the new radio and have decided to use the gear channel instead of the gyro menu to set the gain on my 401. I remember that I had 80% for HH on the gyro menu and want to convert that to travel adjustment.

If your just converting over to using the gear channel, just cut the % you remember in half to start with and adjust from there.

At least that's what I did with mine when I done the same.

The reason I ask this question is because I was playing with the settings while I was flight testing my new programming. I was able to take the travel adjust (not the gyro menu) to 100 without wagging. Which led me to ask the question.

It is my understanding that a RATE setting of 80% in the gyro menu of the DX7 is equal to 1.44 x (80-50) = 43% gain for the 401 gyro.

How does that compare with travel adjustment that has a 300 point range?

If you originally had 80 in Heading Hold on your Futaba radio,
You now want:
80/1.44+50 which comes to: 106 or so,
Thats about what I'm using. Just adjust the endpoint for the gear to 106, and you should be pretty close.

I noticed I couldnt get any wag either, and after reading the forums found the same equation as you.

Scratch that^
Looks like the gear channel may use a whole different conversion than Gyro sens.
Now I see what your talking about.
It uses all 100 in the positive side and negative side and doesnt split them like in Gyro sens.
So now, I'm not sure either, maybe use 43% like you mentioned earlier?

Mid point on the travel would be 0 so I would start at just below 50% between 0 and 100% on the positive side. If the gyro does not initialize in HH you can go to the other side of the travel or just reverse the servo direction on the gear channel.
