View Full Version : Screen Size For Phoenix

Would a larger screen help with orientation when using the Phoenix sim? I've been flying mine on a 15.4" MacBook Pro, but when the heli gets out there a little, I lose all orientation due to not being able to make out the heli's orientation for its small size. It would be much better to be able to see the heli near the size that it is at when first taking off. I think I may need to run it on a TV size screen.

Can anybody provide any advice here?

Thanks!!

I'm using a 15" MBP also and I agree that the heli's orientation can get a little lost if you get way out with a 450 class heli such as a T-Rex. I'm trying to learn to fly closer to the "pilot", but it's a slow process and I'm tempted to change over to a larger heli in the sim so that I can see it more easily.

I've tried plugging my MBP into my HDTV, but it's even worse because I don't have a 1080p set so I get some blurring with the scaling that occurs. I'm not sure if the sim is resolution independent, so a higher resolution may just make the viewing angle wider.

I'm running a 22" widescreen at the full 1680 x 1050 and the 450 size heli's still get too small. There still isn't enough resolution for such a tiny heli.

Don't go investing to get a better experience - I would suggest setting the 600 to fly like the 450 as its much easier to see on any screen.

Keep the heli closer to you, it wont get so small, the program is just simulating the real thing.

Try zooming in a little (I use my mouse roller for this)...no doubt you can use the keypad also?

You could also try running at a lower resolution

Personally I run with Autozoom Off but that may help you also.

cheers

Yes auto zoom will help it seem a little closer longer, but you should learn to keep it closer like in real life you'll know what I'm saying the first time you get your real one too far away!!!! Believe me I know this one.

I've been running Pheonix on a 46" Sony Hi Def LCD through the HDMI output on my laptop, running NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS. I gotta say, it's pretty nice. Actually, it's pretty much flawless.

I am running Phoenix on a full HD 1920 x 1200 Dell 24" LCD and it's just awesome! I think the feel of the distance is pretty good, especially with the new licht reflections, I am almost tempted to wear my sunglasses
I run the video options maxxed out to the limit and allthough still not the real experience, it's getting pretty close.

To answer the question: Yes, resolution certainly makes a difference in orientation in the distance.

I also have the problem of the heli gets too small when it moves away from me and the auto zoom option does not help since you loose the sense how the position of the heli relates to the entire scene.

Here is something I wanted to suggest to Phoenix long time ago but was too lazy to do ;-)

Allow users to set in the preferences settings a perspective factor. This will control how much objects shrink in size when they move away (similar to the effect you get with a tele lenses). At some predefined distance from you, the heli will look just the same as it looks now but as it moves away, it will shrink in size less that it does now (without losing the site on the entire 'static' scene).

Please read my earlier post properly..see below

AUTOZOOM IS OFF.. but use your mouse to enlarge the helicopter so it is larger
