View Full Version : Thoughts on the Spectra (while waiting....)

Greetings all,

As usually happens, I want what is not available... namely a Spectra G.

I have made the progression thru the past three years from Rap .30 V1 thru my current Fury Extreme with YS .91. (You all know how it is....)

Well just when I thought I couldn't be happier, my local Min Air field rep and all around great guy Dusty Barron shows up with a Spectra G. Now, mind you I was thrilled with the performance and beauty of my Extreme. But come on! Same performance, same flight characteristics, 30 minutes of flight time on 30 cents worth of fuel? So after due deliberation, (30 seconds) I had to have one. Of course none available anywhere for the next few weeks.

So with time on my hands, I have decided to read up on the machine and consult the gurus...

Tempest or Extreme head? My flying style is mostly sedate and "big" but hope to make progress in the mild to moderate 3-D world. I like the look of the Tempest head, but don't know if I could make use of all the stuff it offers. 710 mains? 110 tail blades? Brand? I am running V2's on the Extreme...

Toxic 231 or Hanson 260? Bruce's shop is about 20 minutes away from me here in Las Vegas, but I hear mixed reviews about the vibration of this motor. So you guys who are in the know, please chime in. I guess the mega buck Hatori is the exhaust of choice. Duty's sounds so good and quiet. Any other options? Gas or camper fuel? Oil preferences?

Planning on a governor/rev limiter of some sort. I have run GV-1s for quite a while and they work well for me. Any pitfalls with them on a gasser? I know the Revlock/Stator Gator combo is popular, how are they working for you?

Well thanks for listening, and hopefully guiding me along the path...

Tim

All I can say is it's worth the wait...I had a few bugs to work out with mine but it sure flys nice!!! Read all of John Garst's (bigrcr) posts he's very much in the know about his machine...! I got mine with the "FIA Head" as i'm not into the 3D stuff yet and again it flys sooooo smooth! Running camper fuel, 65:1 mix with the TRM 231 and 720 Rotor Techs. John is apparently getting the Toxic pipe to test soon and if all works out well I will be switching from the Hatori...

Cheers...

Seeing Dusty's Spectra G is what enticed me into getting one and I'm VERY happy with it.
Recently there were a few guy in Vegas selling theirs after the TR gearbox and/or control rod failures but those issues have been worked out. All the new kits will have the upgrade fixes already included.

I'm running 710mm and 105 but I think I'm going to try some 110mm on TR as I hear that's the ticket for the gasser. Mine holds pretty well but I have the gain set higher than any of my other heli's on the GY601 (38% vers 32%). Gassers are TORQUE MONSTERS :D

I use the Stator Gator and GV-1 and after you get the motor broken in that's the way to go.
After running break-in oil I'm run the newer Belray H1R (power valve cleaning) fully systhetic oil mixed 3oz to a gallon for a 40:1 ratio.
After breaking (usually 1 gallon of ash-less oil .. Pouland, Yamalube etc..) change out the spark plug for an Iridium NGK CR7HIX, You can get it from NAPA. I got a increase in RPM and much better power transition after changing to this plug as did Dr Tim on his Benzin.

I love the way old Dusty just keeps it simple 99% of the time. I look forward to getting back out West next year and seeing my Vegas buddies.
