View Full Version : CP+ and Plastic Main Blades = Broken Boom

Just tried some plastic main blades. Had a very minor crash. Since the plastic blades are so much more durable, they hit the tail boom and broke it. The regular wood blades would have broken before breaking the boom.

Question is how the heck do I replace the tail boom. I bought the replacement but have no idea how to replace it. The tail assembly is glued or CA in place, so how do I remove it? And there is wiring running through the tail boom, how do you remove the broken tail boom and keep the wiring intact?

Anyone who replaced the tail boom, please let me know how you did it.

You need to de-solder the motor and pull the wires out of the boom/frame. Cut the old boom close to the main frame, then take a drill bit the same size as the main frame hole and drill out what is rest of the boom. The boom material is very brittle, and will basically turn to dust when you hit it with the drill bit. I have done it tooooo many times with those plastic blades

The plastic blades are so flexible that just a little harder than a normal landing will cause the blade tips to break the boom. I really got tired of replacing booms. I started making my own blades out of Wal-Mart yard sticks. They are thicker than paint sticks and fit the blade holders just right. The wood blades are stiffer and don't break booms. I also replaced the carbon fibre boom with brass tubing from the hobby shop. It is just a little smaller in diameter than the stock one so I wrap a little masking tape around it to make a tight fit. No more glue and IF I get a blade strike it only bends the brass and most of the time you can bend it right back. Aluminum tubing is too soft so use brass.

use a CA debonder in the areas that are glued, I would use the drill method as a last resort

Once you get the boom removed ( Drill method is by far the fastest) instead of using CA to hold the new one in place use Hot Glue instead. A hot glued boom is childs play to remove the next time it happens to break.

iv developed a mod witch help protect the plastic blade works very well
go by a alum tube witch is slightly bigger than the composit slide it over cut to be just inside the frame and tail mount as u can see already servived a strike
this is my second boom blades been on for 4 months

I always used a heat gun to soften up the ca. It works wonders but you have to be careful not to overheat the servos.
