i'm in the process of building my hurricane 550 xes and would like to know if these servos will work ok. i'm still learning nose in hovering, fff, and sloppy figure 8's. no 3d yet if ever, so nothing too fancy is needed.

.13 seconds @ 60 degrees and 82 oz/in at 6 volts. they are cheap and tower stands behind their products pretty darn good. of course i'd only use these on the swash, as i'm in gyro/tail servo hell trying to decide on what to get back there. it's come down to the 401/9254 combo or the jrg7703d/8900 combo. any ideas on that?

those servos would be more than enough even over kill I am using spektrum 821's and haven't had a problem and for 60-65 dollars for 4 they are affordable also.

I am a big fan of 401/9254. Mine has performed flawlessly. Has 2 other 401/9650 setups on the other T-Rex 450s. No complaint whatsoever.

You have to look in the Classified. They come with DX7 sets, and people sell off the large servos when they fly only small stuff.

I have picked up two sets this way. 3 are in my Hurricane, leaving me with 6 for other projects.

You can also look for the 821's under the JR name, after all Spektrum and JR are one in the same, And just a few minutes ago I was doing my regular deal looking, and found those at RCHover.com for $14.99 each. I my self am using HS-322, they are $9.99, and though some people may not be fan of them( not fancy enough), I am thrilled with them. They do not have lightning speed, nor can they pull your car out of your drive way with all of its torque, but they have good all around numbers, reliable, and cheap, and I am happy with them. Good luck with your build.

JR and Spektrum are NOT the same, Spektrum is owned by Horizon not by Japan Radio. However you are right that Spektrum has been using some licensed JR products (DX6/Max66 and DX7/7202 Tx platforms and S75 and DS821 servos) from JR and now JR are using licensed technology from Spektrum in their X9303 and 12X Tx and 9ch and 12ch Rx. The new DX6i is an all new original Tx from Spektrum as are all their Rx range.

a guy i work with gave me three brand new servos for the build! the catch? they are a tad outdated. the brand is "royal" and the model name is titan II. brand new still in the packaging, but old. the specs are 48.7 oz-in torque and .24 sec/60 speed. they weigh 1.8 oz each. i know the torque should be good, but isn't that a tad slow? should i just not bother with these and get the tower digi's i was looking at? oh, and i finally chose on the gyro, and i went with the 401/9254 combo. thanks for any insight into this.

After over 30 flights on my Hurricane, I must say that the HS-645MG is a very good servo. It has has metal gear and can produce more than 130 oz of torque. I do basic 3D and inverted flying at the moment. So far I have not found anything about these servos that I don't like. It is source like the HS-65MG for the smaller T-Rex 450 but in a bigger package. It also only costs $35/each

How come I don't see many people using this servo? Is there some deficiency that I need to know about these servos?

also, do i need to get a "series" connector or a "paralell" connector for my 3 cell packs?

Those servos are very slow.

You can pick up a set of 4 DS821s from someone selling them out of their DX7 for about $60 or so.

I looked at the specs between the 2 servos before buying the HS-645MG. At 6V, The 645MG is rated at 0.2s/60 deg where as the DS821 is rated at 0.15s/60 deg. I like the metal gears very much after changing so many carbonite gears on my T-Rexes' servos.

At the skill level that I am flying now (loops, rolls, flips, stall turn, 540, immelman and inverted flying) I could not tell if the servo is slow. May be when my skill is getting better, I will switch to better servos or to a bigger heli with better electronics altogether.

At the hobby shop, the DS821 is around $30/each.

Thanks,

Dan

I wouldn't buy DS821s from a hobby shop. I have bought two sets for $60 per set, shipped, new with the arms and everything. That gives me 8 servos, so no gear changes for a while.

And with the bellcrank setup, the one tip over Ihad did not touch the servo gears. Pretzled the main shaft, flybar, boom (actually broke the boom off), boom supports, tail fin, and of course blades.

well, i placed an order last night, two actually. from readyheli i got my motor
http://www.readyheli.com/H_18_11H_1000_Watt_1100_Kv_Brushless_Outrunner_Mot _p/310103.htm
and one of those whip antennas. from tower i get my castle 60 amp esc, the tower digital hs servos, and my rx/crystal. anyone here use that motor? should work decent with that esc, i think. also, can someone suggest a pinion size, or should i just go with stock?
oh, i plugged those royal servos in last night, and they are royal shite! wicked slow and not smooth. oh well, they were free.

i went with S3050's and judging by the stats its going to be more than enough servo...

Digital
Metal Gear
Ball Bearing

but $45.00 a servo...ouch...

i got the tower hobbies ts-140, which has 82 oz of torque and .13 sec/60 degrees speed. should be enough. anyone here use that motor?
