Hello everyone,

I have been flying my Razor now for a while and I am using the Tango 45-08 with the recommended gearing and 10s evo 20 3700's. The power is ok but I am looking for some grunt. I have my old Ion motor sitting around and the kv is almost the same as the Neu 1515 2Y. Other than the weight I wonder if this would be a powerful setup? Please tell me what you guys think. I just dont feel like buying any more motors this year.
Maybe try my actro 24-4 too?

t-rexn8,

The stock hacker Ion-x motor was a pretty good, efficient motor for the Ion-x when it first came out. Then we only used 10s 10c lipos and 28-32 nicad/nimh's. When the better 20c lipos came out, guys started pushing the power up above 2kw and this ended up frying a lot of stock hacker motor. The motor was redesigned with better bearings and kevlar wrapped armatures, but as power usage continued to rise above 2.5kw, most of these motors did not last too long either (nor did secondary gears either).

The problem with these hacker motors imop is that they just do not get rid of heat very well. They really needed an internal fan (like the Tango's). I used an external 12v PC fan on it and this did help, but not very much. I eventually replaced mine with a Neu 1521/1.5f and since it has a longer can with more fin area, it seemed to run a lot cooler, and last a lot better, although I did have to get new bearings after only ~50 flights, but since then it worked fine.

Myself and another flying mate tried our hacker Ion-x motors on our 10s (evo20 3700) Trex600's and we both found that these motors just ran too hot, even with fans blowing over them. The heat transfer to the pinions resulted in lots of stripped maingears as well. Power was great, while it lasted!

The original MA Razor test pilots also reported a lot of heat related problems when they tried using these motors, which is why they never became a recommended motor for the Razor.

Sorry for the long-winded history channel explanation, but the short answer is No, do not bother trying the hacker Ion-x motor imop.

One of our local guys was flying his tango powered Razor today and it seemed to have lots of 3D grunt but he was using new Evo25 3700's, which probably hold voltage a bit better than your older Evo20's.

Your Actro 24-4, properly geared, might give you a little bit more grunt than your Tango, but your runtimes will suffer.

Anyway, good luck and cheers mate,

Tom C

Thanks for the detailed response with examples. Very informative. Much appreciated. I never really had heat problems with the motor in my Ion, but I am flying quite a bit harder now. The Tango is a great motor and very efficient but the power does not carry through with really fast tick-tocks or piro-rainbows. It has good initial power but it falls off quick, imho. Also I live in a high elevation area. (1 mile up). The reason I started to think of this is because Eco8gator is using this motor on a 10s T-rex 600 with really nice power and so far no issues. He has a video in the flybarless section. Thanks again Tom. We are miles and miles away yet here we are. COOL!

Well I ordered the Neu 1515 2Y gearing and Im going to give the old, heavy, hacker a try. I will keep a close eye on temps though and let you guys know what I find.

Well Tom you were definately correct about how the Hacker would do in the Razor. The motor ran up to 180*F without the PC fan on, and it was a 50*F day. With the fan 160*F. Just imagine how hot that thing would get on a 90*F day! The performance was slighty higher then the Tango 45-08 but flight time went down at least a full minute. So I removed the Hacker and installed a Neu 1515/2Y f/h. I hope this motor is a winner. Although I am pretty sure it will be. : )

t-rexn8,

Hope you have better luck with the Neu. One of my local flying mate uses these motors on his Razors and they definitly have lots of power. I'd estimate ~+15% more than the Tango. But, you do not get something for nothing and his runtimes suffer a bit and on warmish flying days (~+27 deg C, +80 deg F) his motor temps are +180 deg F. He has used 3 different versions; original un-finned, finned, and finned w/internal fan. All run pretty hot from what I can see. He has also had a few bearings and magnet failures so I would not say that they are the most reliable motors on the planet. But, this is probably the price you pay for more raw power.

Good luck and cheers,

Tom C

So how is the Nue working for you? Are you having any issues with your CC HV and nue? Does it run the GOV mode smooth?

Thanks for the replies. The neu has been running pretty well. It seems to have the same instant torque as the Tango, but holds the power better through the tic-tocs. Not much of a difference really. I am going to try the motor on high advance next. The CC HV85 and Neu are work great together. There are some video links posted in the video section.

Happy flying everyone!

Is there anyway you can post the vids where they can be downloaded from the here on the freak. My interent server here in Iraq blocks YouTube. I am planning on picking up one of these Nue motors for my razor and would just like to know what to expect.

Hello. I would like to do that but I am not really sure how. If anyone knows how to convert AVI files or how to post them here I will definately do that. The originals are on mini dvd's then I converted to AVI for Youtube.
