I would like to avoid the high mount on the tail boom block if possible. I expect if I put it under the main shaft it may be hard for the gyro to read movment. Is there any reason it can't be ahead of the mainshaft? On my 450 size Heli's I used a under the boom mount that I could make but I have not seen one for sale.

The gyro can be mounted anywhere on the heli so long as the sense axis is parallel to the mainshaft. It doesn't sense linear motion but angular and all parts of the heli turn about the mainshaft at the same angular velocity. It makes no difference to the operation of the gyro whether it is under the mainshaft of on the tip of the nose or tail.
So under the main shaft is fine if that suits you otherwise. Some folks have found on some helis that it is too close to the motor in that location and picks up noise.

The high gyro moumt is not as unsafe as on something like a Trex 450 due to the size and distance from the flybar.
I tipped my Hurry over and turned the flybar into a pretzel and it didn't get close to the gyro.

The Gyro is now mounted on a plate below the main shaft. I only got in one set of batteries worth hovering and adjusting but it seems to be happy there. After flying a tweaky and nervous CP2 and a 450 Trex clone the H550 is a teddy bear.

you can also mount the gyro "upside down", right? same orientation that you normally would mount a 401 but with the label facing the ground? i've seen that in a couple pics of a trex 600.

Right. If you set it up facing up then you have to reverse the gyro (reversing switch on the gyro, not the rudder channel) when you flip it upside down.

i pulled out my kit last night, and it does look like if you mount the gyro in the "traditional" spot ie on top of the tailboom case it'll be close enough to the rotor head to not get hit by the stab bar in case of a crash. question, does anyone make a mount so i can mount my tail servo on the boom? or is that not recomended with the short boom conversion?

Gaui has a tail boom servo mount. It is two of the boom support mounts with little pieces bolted on.
You could also use the tail servo mount from a Quick of Japan EP8 (www.helicopterhobbies.com) or the Hirobo Shuttle/Sceadu. Both helis use a 21mm OD boom like the Hurricane.

The short boom version balances perfectly with a set of 3S 2200mA battery packs. If you use the bigger packs (3200mA or bigger packs), the heli becomes nose heavy. Mounting the servo on the tail boom helps out with balancing the heli on larger packs.
