A fellow I met at the flying field offered me his Hurricane 550 for $300. According to him, he prefers his 50-sized helicopters because they are slower to respond and easier to fly. He saw how I flew the pants off my T-Rex 450XL and thought his old heli might be a good match for my ability with smaller helis.

It's the standard kit, ESC, motor, 4 servos (standard Hitec), a pair of 2200mAh generic Chinese LiPos (Aplus brand, I think, condition is unknown, but they seemed to fly just fine, no swelling as far as I can tell). Flown 5 times, never crashed, only hovered, watched him fly it at the field. He will be removing the gyro and Rx to use in another heli. The canopy is a custom paint job, but very basic.

My suspicion is that I could probably push for a little better deal (and he might take it, he mentioned that he often sells his used aircraft for 50 cents on the dollar), but the lowest-end kit price I've found is $219 for a kit + motor combo.

Good deal for the heli, ESC, separate BEC, 4 servos, and 2 batteries? Or should I give it a pass?

Where have you seen $219?

Normal price is $319 for kit with motor and ESC. It depends on what servos, can be $12 each to $85 each.. The BEC is maybe $20 - $30. The batteries I would consider throw aways. They might last, they might not.

Kit + Motor only: http://flying-hobby.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_30_36&products_id=174

(Note: In case that link stops working at some point in the future, that's the Hurricane E550 standard with motor, no ESC, for $219 plus shipping.)

A lot of people might be interested in that combo, because so many end up replacing the stock ESC with something beefier to go to higher-voltage setups.

So let's assume he went for the
* Hitec HS-311 standard servos, $9 each, $36
* Kit + motor, $219
* Gaui 50A ESC: $60

Total brand-new for the low-end standard kit sans gyro, batts: $315

Not such a great deal since I don't know the value of those batteries and have plenty of 2200-ish mAh 3S batteries lying around anyway... Thanks for helping me clarify my thoughts there.

That is a deal. Of course, add shipping. :)
