Hi,

This is my first time posting in this section and just want to say hello!

Anyways, anybody ever fly around the riverbed area (bike trail) off the 57 freeway and Chapman exit? Saw it a while ago and thought it be a good place to fly my fleet. Next time I go, I'll take some pictures.

I don't think that area will be ok, Juvenal Hall, and county Jail and court house are all on the west side of that river bed I don't think they will like things flying near by.

I have been eyballing that area for a while, even better is the E bank just south of 22 frwy there is a golf course with a ton of open space. shure would hate to pull my heli outa the water though and sand aint no fun either. keep us informed please and you may want to come out to ocma as one of our guests . AMA card required.

How about the river bed on 405 and euclid, lot open space also, but many park near by open for electric.

I fly mostly my 500 now, beside AP, there is some ball park around empty all weekday,

I'm new to this hobby and would like to come out and watch you guys doing stunts (and learning few things) with the birds. Is the "official" fly field next to the navy base air station (and the small dog park)? I was down in Seal Beach playing golf at the Navy GC on 3/15 when on the 10th green (around 11 am) I observed an awesome pilot doing 3D, etc.

Thanks, I'll have to check that place out, a lot closer to work.

I went by at lunch a flew a tank, the location I said was wrong. This place is off the 5 and Chapman. Only problem is parking. It was pretty windy, but here's some pics of the area:

One of these days, I'll have to go and check out ocma, but after I have gotten better at flying. I've only flown a dozen times. I've heard about it, but haven't checked it out yet.

Thanks,

Jody J.

Just be aware as this is designated as a MERCY AIR heli port/base. They typically approach from the northeast. Thats my fire training center right there. Also there is a good amount of PD heli activity at the stadium. You may be able to fly for a bit, but its possible you might be run out by MERCY crews.

Frustrated...

So I have this Trex now, right... Well, when I got it, two of the servos were jacked, so I replaced them, no sweat, went to Gyro and got two new HS-65hb's when I got the bird. Got them installed last week before flying and flew the trex saturday at OCMA, no issues. Smooth and sweet.

The day before yesterday, I go fly it at lunch and run a pack through, no sweat, sweet.

I go to run up a second pack, and the belt snaps in the boom. Damn, I'm glad that happened on the ground.

Buy a new belt. Replace the belt.

Today, I go to fly it. Flies great, nice flight. About halfway through the pack, I land the bird, and go to up the gyro gain. I didn't spool all the way down, the blades were probably still at 1k - 1500k headspeed.

I take the gyro gain from 44-48, and something happens, something goes wonky.

The blades hit the boom, bend the boom, I freak out and hit fhrottle hold, the bird flops over on its side, all pissed off, sounding like somethings running!

One of the two new servos I put in is doing laps, like it's a winch... gears are complete destroyed.

The other new servo I put in, the gears are destroyed.

I look at the head, and black rubber is coming out all over.

I figure what happened is the dampers were really worn, I wasn't paying attention to them, when I was adjusting gain on the ground, the heli caught a breeze, had a boomstrike, and destroyed the servos. EIther that, or my rear servo went into "winch" mode, drew the blades into the boom, and that's what caused the boom strike.

Other than that, I don't have a clue what happened. It was sitting there spinning, and then it just got pissed off and ate itself. Now, my transmitter voltage was fairly low, at 10.8 volts, so maybe that was it. I dunno.

I've had that damn trex for two weeks now. In the two weeks I've had it, I've replaced four servos, belts, dampers, all kinds of nonsense.

I bought that Mini Titan months ago, and have had to do almost NOTHING to it.

Ok, I'm done venting. I got a 750 dollar ticket last week for getting caught with lapsed insurance, so no clue when I'll get this thing running again. AS far as I can tell, I just need new servo gears and a tail boom, but I'm not sure if the main shaft is bent, or feathering shaft. Flybar looked doinked but not too bad.

So irritating. Should've just flown the Titan but there was cop watching me fly in a corner of the field I was kicked out of, and that Titan is menacing now with the scorpion. The Trex is far less so.

Dammit dammit dammit.

72 or 2.4 ? Sounds like it went into Idle up without you doing anything. hmmmmm

I'm running Spektrum

It was in normal mode, and I didn't stop it, just throttled down to about 20-30 percent. It was already spun up and running, in the grass. It was fairly gusty.

I'm learning towards servo or damper failure. The one servo in "winch" mode is more than just busted gears, it doesn't respond to anything anymore. I haven't pulled it off the receiver to see if maybe the reciever was sending it bad commands.

I'll know more when I get home and pull the thing apart and do some more investigation.

Either way, I'm not freakin adjusting gyro gain while the bird's running anymore, and will be much more aware of how quicky trex dampers fail.

Lesson learned.

Welcome to Arbort Benheli, I on weekday basic fly there from 10 am till I crash :), on weekday kinda boring there, cuz only 1 - 3 heli pilot vs the planks. Look like I am ground this week due to crash yestesday and today also.

Anyone know where I can get new swash plate for 500? My separated today after crash, I been running around from 3 rd, Rob'rc, to ultimate ...., no luck. :(

Aox, what the F'n heli? fooling around with programing while spinning 2000rpm. Doh! sorry dude. Bullseye and me went to ocma and burned some nitro today, and it was nice , JodyJ you should come out toocma and give it a look. we dont worry about reta cops and planes. just our own private heli spot. I might be there tomorrow again from 9 - 12.

Lowflyer, I just called Jay at Gyro, and they have no Trex 500 swashes. He's going to order at least one tomorrow and it will be there Friday if you still need it. He's also asking the servo guy to order some HS-65 karbonite and metal gearsets, since they don't have them.

Also, no one in OC stocks the Trueblood V2 dampers for Trex. What the F!

Airbung, no kidding. Like the day at the field where I'm adjusting trim with my collective hand on the cycling gimbal, and the helis just descending, I'm trimming away. I gotta LAND, THEN TRIM. LAND, THEN TRIM. Twit.

Took a damage tally here at home. Somehow I hit the boom hard enough to dent it in two places, bend the main and feather shaft, finish destroying the dampers in the head, but not do anything but notch my carbons a bit near the blade grips. I'll take it... So the tally is one hs-65 gearset, one completely destroyed hs-65 servo, dampers, flybar, main shaft, spindle, and boom. I wouldn't feel so bad if the bird was FLYING when I had the damage. Anyway. She's on the shelf for now.

When I was shutting down the t-rex after the damage, a cop rolled up on me and sat with his engine running in the parking lot about 20 feet behind me. I ignored him. I'm not breaking municipal code. The code says no model airplane flying, and so does the sign. So I don't fly my T-28 there anymore. Will try to do some guerilla Mini Titan flying tomorrow. Glad that 5-0 didn't give me any grief. Can't we all just get along? What's with all the cop drama with me lately? I got over the cop drama when I was a teenager.. I've been good, I swear. What the f?

I wanted to goto OCMA, but I still work for the man Monday - Friday. Ahh corporate life. Will be out there Saturday, maybe Sunday.

Aox, if you got to do trim then there must be something thats needs some adjusting on the heli, we dont normally use any trim after set up. I only use the sub trim and travel adjust , keeping all gymbal trims set to center.check the finless vid for proper setup of that gyro and Tx. do you use the gyro menue or travel adjust ? cop was finishing his coffe and sandwich and getting in some heli entertainment. we should charge them.hehe

I am testing K&B Dream Design dampers on the 500... trust me... You wont want the Trueblood stuff when these come out! Ask Airbungholio about the ones he is running on the 600!!!!

No shirt! I forgot about them cause they work so good. I got 50 + flights on them and they still rock! my 600 has never flown better, bullseye uses them also and says the same thing. I need a set for my N9s.

I have a set of the Orange K&B's for my Logo 500. I picked them up because Zguy said when he went to his 560's he had some head wobblage. I haven't installed them yet, however.

I figured the Truebloods will be better than the stock dampers which've failed on me, and evidently need to be replaced often, from what I read. Or K&B's. SOMETHING that is stiff with a little more MTBF, if you know what I mean.

I don't remember what the issue was that day at Irvine, or what I was dinkin with, but I had both feet in the newb zone, not just one like I do now. If I ever had to put in cyclic trim, I'd go in and fix the balance, or pushrod length on the swash, or whatever. This time I was upping the positive endpoint on my gear channel to increase HH gain. I've done it tons of times on the MT and Logo, but this time, the Trex threw a fit and ate itself while I was doing it. Autocannabilistichelism.

I didn't even get to see it. It was spinning at less than half revs, in normal mode, I looked down, hit down and select to go to config mode, moved to endpoints, select over to gear, beep beep beep, added 4 beeps, and CLACK clack CLACK ANGRY HELI MADNESS WTF THROTTLE HOLD OMG.

Maybe I hit the cyclic, I don't think so. Wind may have taken it over. The servo may have failed before the crash. Modifying my adjustment phase to include landing and spinning down the heli will alleviate this in the future :P

Made it out to arbor park today. It took a while, but I eventually found it when I saw a heli on the roof of a car. I ended up on the wrong side of the fence so I had to drive around. No one else was there, and the heli guy was in no mood to talk. It’s probably a good idea not to chat with someone who yells f**k while he’s wrenching. So after a while I just left.
