just finished watching you Spartan gyro videos, trying to get a head start since it's my first Spartan gyro to go in one of my heli's since someone recommended to me :YeaBaby:
NIGHTRIG goes down !! 15 seconds into 3D flight... During the day luckily.
OK so I put the night rig together to go for a pre-night/twilight mission. Fire it up, put it in the air in normal mode. Switch to idle up, and roll it to its back, and than pull over the top with 1/2 of pirouette to tail first snake towards myself. As I get back to right side up, and transition from negative collective to positive, the blade disc starts wobbling really bad, and all of the sudden !! BOOM !! boom strike, and down she comes from about 40' up. Blades stop completely, canopy is thrown clear and unharmed. Heres what I believed happened. The short link from blade grip to washout lever broke, dont know which side, but this caused uncontrolled flapping of one of the blades. couldnt keep up, and in she went. Nothing I could do. I found the link about 20' away from downed heli. The link literally was cracked in 2 spots taking out the top right corner of the link. Looking at the circle of the link, the piece missing was from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock in the circle of the link. A little bummed, but not bad. Not as bad as the guy yesterday morning who lost his 12,000 dollar F 18 to a fireball. The only bummer is that this was flight number 5 on a brand new 600N... DOH !! not a record, but sucks to have to wrench on something new to fix it already.
Damage Report:
Main shaft... probably bent, not sure,
Spindle... Same thing
Tail boom
Tail braces
TR shaft
Torque tube,
Front plastic radio mount
Night blades tail and main
TJ revmax... DOA !
canopy support front
2 pieces of night wire
some servos gears
and a partridge in a pair tree !
Will start tearing into it here shortly... this is a dedicated night rig so Im not in to much of a hurry to fix it... I will throw parts at it as necessary.... I have another 600N to build so I will share the wrench time between them. Other than that.. Bakersfield was fun as you can see by my plank pics.
Will see you guys next weekend @ OCMA... I work Tues Thurs Saturday this week.

big dissapointment, sorry to hear about your rexy. those links are not supposed to break that easily, but then you were doing 3D with that cow of a heli. all that electrical wire and battery is going to put some atress on her. you need some 90 links. $12,000 fire ball, thats what happens when you mix fuel with fire. what is the exhaust temp on one of those turbines? I heard it was 300- 600 *C. thats hot shirt.

300 - 600 *C temp, I dare not go anywhere near that heli with metal melting temp.
yea... their typically running about 600 C... about 1100 F. Throw some smoke oil on it when its not hot enough, and Pipe temps can exceed 1800 F Doh hot.... when they hit they sound incredible, like a sonic boom.

I'm planing on going out to OCMA wed. morning until about noon. So nice to have a field close to home and Work...
Might be able to make it out on Sunday also.

Bullseye, my daughter (3) took that picture just before she bounced the camera off my skull. its a great picture made me laugh.
Thats what they initially thought. It turned out that under aerodynamic load, the nose collapsed and it went in. It happened about 1 month later to another guy at full throttle high speed about 200' off the ground. Same thing exactly. violent pitch to break up mid flight... Apparently there have been several reports of this with the Ultra Bandit.
Too bad... How bout them helis ?

OK OK.... Sirbung called me wondering if I was messing with him... YES I AM MESSING WITH HIM! Why? Because he is a great friend! We have actually known each other for a long time.
So if some people think because I call him AIRBUNGHOLE that I am unhappy with the guy then you all got it wrong... It's called friends messing with friends WHO can say anything with each other and have a GOOD time about it :)

They were right to said "smoke the grass kill your brain cells" but @ OCMA you only smoking the pavement :). I guess it a lot worse than grass :)
