WOW that is some document. So by engine powered, does that mean glow or gas but you can still fly electrics?

You need to search the archival of the hearing when this ordinance was passed (or was amended) to see how the City Attorney office then defined the word "engine-powered" in its recommendation to the city council. I'm going to be bad and play devil advocate and argue that the intention of the ordinance is to prohibit the flying of all aircrafts powered by an engine, be it gas or electric. Do the homework before attending hearing and argue the case for an exemption for electric helis only.

I'm not sure which of you I'll see at the San Diego Fun Fly, but whoever, I'll see you there. If you don't recognize me, just ask Finless. :)

I'll recognize you Sam... At least from behind. :)

Guys, Around 2:00pm I went to go fly a few batteries on my new V-BAR 500 @ ARBOR PARK.... There was a older guy I have never seen before and he had a cheep $25 foamy flying it around 500 feet up and then landed it in the Strawberry field. Then he drove his car next to the fence by his plane, (I have no Idea how he got it back there) then started honking his horn in his car full time until someone helped him. I tried to talk to him but it was like talking to a brick wall... He needed that foamy!!!!! Perfect example why they want it closed down.

OMG.. What a tool. My guess is he got all indignant when you approached him??

I forgot to mention he DROVE ON THE GRASS TO THE BACK FENCE!!!!!

Why the hell did he drive?? It's what? 100 yards from the parking area to that fence??? Reminds me of the idiots at the gym who HAVE to park right up front and then go run 4 miles on the treadmill...

You cannot prevent stupidity.

The term "culling of the herd" comes to mind...

Last year when the Park maintenance guy called the cops on us the cops came out with the code in hand. We told him
These are not engine powered but electric. This cop had 25 years on the force and he didn't want to kick us out but when we told him that he called the Lieutenant on the radio and the Lt said "let em fly".

So we do have a precedent with the police but the "engine powered" thing is a weak argument and can be argued either way especially by police if they want to kick us out. However it does say "airplanes" not helicopters!

Now the growing issues is the park is surrounded by a fence and on the other side of the fence is all military Ammunitions and airbase. The base has been nice and also lets us fly there but asks we keep the aircraft to 200 feet and inside the fence. Well not a problem for us heli guys but the damn electric plankers just cant seem to follow the requested rules from the MPs. Several time now I have seen the MPs drive up to the fence and warn those dudes to stay at 2009 feet and within the fence. One time they got PO'ed and shut everyone down for the day.

So the rule says "engine powered airplanes". I think we should use this to get rid of the airplanes. If that happens I think all will be OK from that point on for us electric heli guys.

That is a positive note if you guys can get the base commander, etc. to provide a letter that flying of helis within 200 feet or yards of the fence is not a problem. More favorable evidence equates to better chance at the meeting before the city council.

Ban all planes from public parks. and have the guy who drove on the grass cited and sued by the city for damage to the park, he may have broken a few sprinklers. did anyone get a picture of this moron ? it pays to keep a camera handy.

sounds like a throttle endpoint issue.

Thank you. I went into the travel adjust menu and increased the low to 116% and it appears things are fine now.

I'm calling AMA to see if they can help us get this field sanctioned as a AMA field.
Bob and I talked about it last week.

Bob can you and I get together and work on a proposal for the Base. If they give us the OK I think we have a good chance to save the field.

I will do more foot work when I get back from Taiwan.

Thanks Guys
Jerome

Wes Du Cou sent me a big packet of AMA info on how to find and keep a field. I'd be more than happy to pass it along to Bob when I see him tomorrow. Might have some info in it that would help.

I dont think Arbor will ever get sanctioned unless the Base signs up for it. AMA rules state that you cant fly within 3 miles of a airport. We are 1000 feet from an airport.

But hey if it can happen great.

Kevin that would be great. Please give it to Bob.
Hey Bob please give it to me when I get back and we can work on getting the base to give us the ok with a proposal...
If we keep the planes out and fly low they should be happy to have us..

Bob,

Along those same lines... Do you remember flying @ the old TUSTIN L.T.A ? I used to fly at an active Marine heli base there back in the 80's. That was a sanctioned AMA field. This could be a possibility. Its gonna take some interaction, and meetings with the base CO. As we know military works on answers to problems. Have your ducks in a row if you get a meeting with them. They will want to know all solutions to all questions, and have it spelled out in black and white. Give them a presentation where all scenarios are played out, and have answers ready to go. This leaves them with no out as questions are already answered..... Keep in mind the wild card is now we're post 9-11 era.

Good luck ...

I was stationed at the Tustin Marine Base in the late 80's - early 90's. From what I can recall it was a great incentive for the guys on the base to come out and learn to fly too . . . I miss that field . . ..

LTA was a neat place to fly.

I remember that it was home to a lot of American R/C Helicopter fliers (Marvin Copfer was one).

The good old days!

Dudes, had my first night flight last night with my 450, man night time is sweet! So excited though that I went for a flip, forgot i was still in hover up, luckily my cat like reflexes and I was up high enough I pulled her around and than kicked my own ass :-)

Ooo also gonna pick up the new Torque Tube for my 500 today, man this hobby is addictive :)

Bob

You most definitely can fly within 3 miles of an airport; you just have to let the airport folks know about it. The field where Buzzin' the Border takes place is less than 3 miles away from a US Navy Helicopter base.

Does anyone fly at Mile Square Park in Fountain valley? Which side of the park can we fly?

BikeNBoatN

Haven't been able to fly at Mile Square in years, ever since they turned the whole hobby area into a giant golf course. Just what we need, another f-n golf course!

The grassy park area is pretty much out of the question: too many trees, too many picnic-ers, too many bystanders, and I think it's also posted no flying model aircraft.
