Question: The instructions mention to use loctite on the tail slider nut (see photo) but I used CA for now because I don't want to melt the plastic with loctite. Will loctite melt this polymer based plastic? I thought I read a report about that previously.

I didn't put anything on it. That part screws together efin tight and I just can't see it coming loose, a little CA may be good insurance. I don't put loctite on ANYTHING plastic.... that's just my personal preference.

Bruce, your canopy is plastic, correct?

I thought I read awhile back that some 5003D kits were coming with fiberglass canopies. Anyone know if this is true?

Yes, its the plastic version.

Which Jazz ESC is the the best on a L600 on 10S? The PowerJazz?

If running 8S or 10S, the Jazz 55 (3S-10S) would probably be the best ESC since your current will go down as your voltage goes up. With 6S, the Jazz 55 is just right on the border and the Jazz 80 is limited to 6S, which is why I was torn between the two.

Obviously this is only what I have read and others who have real world experience should speak up.

Although I do use a Jazz 55 on 8s, IMHO its working too hard and has temp issues. If your going to pound on the heli hard on 8s, be ready to add heat sinks and poss. a fan.

Alrighty then... got through another page tonight on the build. Main gear and tail rotor assembly are done but I went through a few issues on this one and found a step that may help others.

Boring my ballz...
The balls used to attach the tail stabilizer rods to the horizontal fin had the correct inner diameter for the M3 screws but the balls on the lower end were not right. In the instructions, the balls that will attach links from the tail stabilizer rod to frame are listed as 4.8x2.5mm and will use a M2.5x20 screw for bolting down. The problem is that the inner diameter is exactly 2.5mm yet the outer diameter of the M2.5 screw is about 2.86mm with the threads. This obviously won't go through the hole. The Logo 600 3D balls seem to be correctly sized for M3.

http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=31589&d=1195979820

So improvising a bit here, I bored out the hole on the ball to match the screw. This required clamping the ball between a hard rubber sheet in the table vise and using a 7/64" drill bit to bore a bigger hole. I didn't have any metric size bits but this was close enough after applying some lateral force during drilling. Its also important to use some cutting oil or 3-1 household oil during the drilling process to avoid overheating. When done, I was able to thread the M2.5x20 screw through the ball and attach it to the link.

After this, I epoxed the threaded links into the rod and finished mounting the CF tail stabilizer rods.

Extra washer on main shaft...
Another subtle detail to the instructions for washers on the main shaft is to place 2 on the upper side of the gear and one on the bottom. The instructions list the size but show 1 for the 600 3D and 2 for the 500 DX/3D in an indirect way.

Breakaway landing gear...
In one of the pictures I show the M3 nylon screws (phillips head) that I cut down to 10mm to replace the steel ones so the landing gear lets go before the frame in a crash. This was learned from others here in the Mikado section.

Set screw for landing skids...
I really like the nice touch with the set screws to mount the skids to the landing gear. The instructions say to use glue but obviously its not necessary. I'm going to order skid nuts (K&B yellow 8-9mm) also on my next round of purchases.

Overall, this is a really cool looking helicopter and I'm amazed at how lite it is for the size. Just had to sit back and admire the aesthetics and engineering even though its not done yet. :noteworthy

Here are some pictures.

Jazz 55 is enough on 10s with teh L600 if you fly like 90% of pilots. in norway the heatsink problem might only become apparent in the height of summer, but when i was last in scandinavia it was mighty cold!

Power jazz is only needed if your are called Daniel Jetschin, otherwise, the 55 will do.

OK, then I think I go for the 55-10-32 on the 500. I can use it on a 600 later... The 55 will probably work good on a 500 here in Norway. In the winter it's really cold, but in the summer it can be very hot! What do you think? Should I go for the 80-6-18? If so - why? Or will a 55-10-32 work here in Norway?

Thanks, this is a really fun build. Did anybody else have the issue with the inner diameter being too small on the lower balls to the stabilizer rod?

Nope, mine fit fine. I was also amazed how quickly it all went together. It was *almost* disappointing ;)

I wonder if I did something wrong??? They were the last two balls from the bag I was working with and the M2.5 screw threaded into the hole as expected. Oh well, its all set now.

When I recover from my 6003D crash I think I will order a 5003D. It May be a few months but man those are sweet on 6s. Any Rummer was here a couple of months ago with his and that thing rocked big time!

See, that's my dilemma. The 500 is so awesome, could the 600 be much better?

I don't think one is better than the other with the right setup..... just different.

After I'm done with this I'll probably convert it to Vbar in about 6 months but will enjoy it fully in the meantime.

The motor should be here on Monday and the tail servo (Futaba BLS251) will most likely be here Tuesday. Also, I ordered some yellow skid nuts to dress up the landing gear along with other misc. items. The ESC, battery, cyclic servos will be ordered shortly.

This will look good with my yellow K&B tail blades. Now I just need to start thinking about a paint scheme. It looks like a lot of canopies are being painted out in in florescent green, orange, and yellow. I even sent an email to Dave Yost (http://www.dydheli.com/canopies.htm) about a custom job on FG and he mentioned February at the earliest.

Don't bother with 15tooth on that motor Bruce, all imho of course. 16 tooth will be great at 75% goverened.

BruceW

I was planning on starting with the 16T and figured 75-85% should give enough room for the governor to do its magic. My guess is the first week will be spent playing with different settings. The 17T is being sent back since I was worried about the motor running too hot and with unnecessary HS.

You other guys can answer to. ;) In the winter here in Norway it can be about 5-20 Celsius. In the summer it can be 15-35 Celsius. 35 at the most. 40 in the sun.
