View Full Version : Hurricane 550 front gear problem

Hi guys!!
I purchased a carbon framed Hurricane 550 with Gaui 1110Kv motor.
After one or two hover (normal mode) my front gear (with the ok stamp on it) became useless (the teeth were gone).
Any suggestion?

I needs to be not too tight, not too loose.

One way to set it is to stick a strip of normal paper or plastic between the pinion and gear, then push the motor in tight. Then tighten the motor bolts. When the paper is removed, teh mesh is about perfect.

Should i hear a silent "klack-klack" when i move the motor and hold the gear?
Or is that just too much space?

If you hold the main gear and rotate the motor can, you hsould just feel some movement. Not enough to make noise.

Sounds like you had too loose of gear mesh.

Cut two 5mm wide, 50mm long news paper strips and put them inbetween the front gear and the motor gear.

Now get the motor with the motor mount barely winded on, on the frame and push the motor as close as possible to the front gear (with the news paper strips in between).

Take the motor with the motor mount carefully of the frame (so you don't change the motor's position on the mount), and wind the motor completely on the motor mount.

Viola, that's it.

CNC delrin main gear will do the proper job. It cannot be thicker but it will stay much longer.

If you sell him the better gear, his problem won't go away for a long time. First he has to set the distance between the gears.

Another method is, since you're using the cf frame you will be able to turn the heli upside down and look at the distance between the main gear and pinion gear. What I do is just move the motor until the gears touch, and when I turn the motor I can see the interaction between the two gears. As the first tooth of the pinion starts to loose "grip" of the main gear you'd notice that the second pinion tooth will have a fairly good grip of the main gear. If the gear is too loose then you'd notice that when you move the motor, there is free play between the gears. This is extreamly bad and your gears will strip easily. In summary, gear distance too loose = main gear stripping and gear too tight = very hard to turn motor. Hmmm. Hope that it didn't sound too complicated.

I also suspect that gear too tight with a high power rig = melted gear.

Well the ability to heat the hear up to the point where the teeth soften and strip....

Finless build video explains the process perfectly. Do yourself a favour and check it out. I have built helis for 25 years and still managed to pick up some good tips from the man.
