Well, I ventured out today to get some flying in, Ron makes me jealous with his great weather and great flying. It was 38 degrees and only an 8 MHP wind. If my darn hands didn't freeze it would have been more fun. It would also have been nice if the normal grey Indiana sky wasn't so grey. Makes it hard to see the orientation.

The Gasser ran OK, but I really need to play with the tuning now that it's this cold. Did some loops and stall turns and warmed myself up for the turbine.

The turbine takes a bit more Powermax gas to fire up on these cold days. First time I saw the turbine smoke as it started up. Took almost a minute before the smoke stopped. Once cooking though it was sweet! Nothing weather wise seems to bother that bird. Had it doing loops and stall turns, along with high speed figure 8's and general playing around. On my second flight I had a strange thing occur. My 611 gyro decided that I should practice slow piros to the left without telling me. I lifted off and then it started. I thought I hit my rudder trim so I landed and checked. Nope! I looked at the tail and saw the pitch slider slowly move to the right until it was at the end point. I shut down and powered it off and back on. No more problem. Then I restarted and everything went fine. That was strange. Maybe I went into the turbine start sequence before the gyro had finished initializing, I don't know.

I also found out that I only get 2 1/2 starts on a gas fill. Wouldn't catch on the third start. Normally I get 6 starts on one fill. I guess the cold really makes a difference on how much Powermax it takes to get the proper temperatures to fire up. No videos today as everyone thought I was crazy to go fly in the cold.

Oh well, there's always tomorrow. It'll be a heat wave at 42 degrees. Wind should be the same. I'll see if I can blackmail someone to come out and film me.

I found that in the cooler weather the butane falls off or something and the starts take longer and deplete the canister. It is really cool seeing the hot breath of the turbine though and at night its really something as well.

Glad you got out today -

Film at 11

Went out again today and managed to get three flights on the Turbine and 1 on the Gasser. Ever had it start to rain on you in the middle of a flight? It was really gray out and rain was supposed to get here late tonight according to our crack weather forecasters. WRONG!! I was in the middle of a flight when I thought I felt a rain drop. Sure enough it started to rain. Nothing like rain at 38 degrees. It was also supposed to be a heat wave at 45 today. That'll never happen. At least I got some time in. Nobody was crazy enough t come out today except for JC, who stopped by on his way home from Chuckie Cheeze with his son. He helped tach in the head while he froze. He wasn't dressed for our fine weather. At least he's still dedicated to flying and helping.

Ron,

What head speed are you running when you do your tricks?

Rain at 38 - that is nasty ...

I run 1600 at idle1 for 3D

Took the Hughes MD500 out for some fun today and hope to have video link up soon.

Ron,

Cool, I'd like to see that video.

1,600.....AHH that's where mine runs smoothest, but I've been told to get it to 1,650 for areobatics. Today at 1,610 is was the smoothest it's ever been but when I went up a point on the curve I saw a slight vibe. I put it down and it smoothed out great. I had a heck of a time starting today so I upped the glow voltage parameter to 34 and it started better.

I also ran the Gasser and it ran fine after I put the needles back to 1 3/8. I got the high out too rich and it had no power. Not enough time to run it much though with the rain.

Ron,

Looks Good! I assume that the Turbine is not a Wren? Do you have to stay tail down to counteract thrust from the jet? Is it easy to fly?

It flies pretty much like the real thing - a big slug when transitioning with plenty of power though.

It has a Jetcat in it.

It's always my pleasure. I was definately NOT dressed for 38* though. Next time I'll bring a heli... and a COAT! At least I left before the rain came.

Lou your Turbine is running smooth - smooth now.
