Hi
I am just building my first nitro and i got the metal motor fan . What glue works the best for sticking the magnets to the aluminum fan? Is CA ok or is their a loctite that works better?

Also where can i get a balancer to balance the fan from? And what is the best way to go about it?
Also does the clutch assembly require balancing, and if so what is the best way to go about it?
Thanks heaps
Simon

Hi

dont use CA glue to fix the mag in they will not stay there long... Use 20min apoxy that does the job well, I think that is what most people use.

as for a fan balancer you will just have to have a shop around, start with your LHS.

I have and use both of these, both will do fans/hubs ,the dubro is alot nicer as you can raise one side up and use it to balance the rotor head as well ! ;)http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=balancer&search=Go as for how to balance a fan, look in the finless trex600n build videos, bob gives excellent info how to, i'm sure you would do the metal one the same way :fly

Just getting to balancing the fan as Finless has on his video, even with one of the older brass high point balancers I stole (borrowed) from my bro's ancient stash of goodies.
The question I have is Fin's vid seems to describe putting the divits to remove weight on side opposite of the side the drops down(heavier side), is this right? my thoughts would be to divit the heavy side that falls lowest on the balancer. my logic confuses me....Taking the weight off the lighter side just makes the heavier side heavier doesn't it?

yes your right ..take the weight off the heavy side..don't get in a hurry ! only take a tiny bit off at a time....you can always take more off but cant really put it back:wink:

Thanks for the bit of reasurance before grinding material, it is just ever so slightly off balance, but I had that same balancer on a shelf. the process only seems logical, but was just slightly off watching that part of the vid where he pointed his fingers.... for us detailed FREAKS!!, I had to check. Finless, you are the BEST, your help is unprecidented and much appreciated!! Your vids ROCK!!

Yep I also used the Top-Flite balancer. worked good.

One thing, if you use epoxy to install the magnets, be sure to squeeze the magnet in with a pair of pliers, this will push out the excess epoxy and get the magnet seated all the way.

Did I make a mistake in the vid and NOT say to remove from the heavy side? I do sometimes use the wrong words?

I use JB weld on my aluminum fans to glue the magnet in,works good and no chance of it coming out.

Dont use ca as it is not reliable enough. Use epoxy and make sure you squeeze them in with a small c clamp. Put a piece of business card between the clamp so you dont damage the magnets. As far as the balancing goes, make one.

I have CAed magnets to plastic and metal fans for years and NEVER had one fall out. One of my scale helicopters (which was once my 3D bird) still runs one of those 3 magnet setups used by Helimax governors! That's like dinosaur technology, but the three magnets are still going strong after a decade!

Now, JB weld is REALLY bad. It will interfere with the properties of the magnet and reduce its power.

Only as i'v read on these forums, that JB has Metallics(bits of metals) in it that could poss. (maybe not likely) effect the sensor reading....BEWARE....
