The 12Z and the 401 are new to me, I currently use a 9C and 611 gyros.

Does the 12Z gyro rate setting (displayed) equal actual gyro gain?

What is a good starting point (gain setting) for a TREX450 and the 401 gyro?

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi there.
Yepp, the 12Z displays the actual gyro-gain when set up in GY-mode. (same as for the 9C)
The 12Z is a bit different than the 9C in setup, is pretty straightforward when you get familiar with it.

General starting tip: For normal setup I recommend that you use Rate1 for all idleup's/flightmodes. The 12Z (as the 14MZ)has the possibility of having 3 different gain-rates for each idleup and and separate switches can be set up for each rate. -Many struggle with this in the beginning with the 12Z and the 14MZ. (this also apply for the Governor menu, that operates in same way. Pretty confusing in the beginning!)
So, just use Rate1 for gain for each idle-up/flightmode, and you're soon ready for takeoff.

I think you should be able to start with approx 65% gain on your 401 and adjust from there. (with a Futaba 9650 on the tail)

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replay, I fould out how to select different rates and even how to select a pot to adj the gain quickly during setup. I am starting to like the 12Z alot.

I am using the 9650 with the 401 and will start with 65%. It just sounds high compared to the 34 to 37% with the 611 on a 90 size machine.

Thanks

Hi.
Glad you figured it out.
Well, the 34-37% gain on the GY601/611 is actually the "non-standard" settings among gyro's. :)
For a 401 a gain of approx 80-85% for Normal, 75-80% for Idle1 and 65-75% for Idle2 are normal gain values, and gives you the best from a 401. (offcourse it all depends on servo, tailblades, general setup/vibrations, etc). This is also the case for most other gyro's, and relates to 50-90 size.

I do not think a 401 will hold the tail in a good manner at all if you run it as low as 40%.

The 601/611 has a tremendous holding power and tends to burn/wear out the servo too fast if set at too high gain. (nevertheless, it holds the tail in a tight grip even at 37% gain)
I notice that most people find the value of 37% good enough for gain on a 601/611, and I assume this is triggered by some posts on forums like this.
However, you can use other gain values. (I use 60-50-40% for Normal-Idle1-Idle2 in my 50 and 90 size heli's with 601/611's)

Good luck.

If I go above the 40% the tail of my 450SEv2 is wagging like a very happy dog...

80-85% sounds very high.

Hi,

I profit of this post to ask a configuration question with the (nearly) same hardware.

I just bought a T12FG and i try to setup correctly my GY401. I use only rate1 and i defined for each condition (normal, ideleup1, idleup2) the following settings: GY,AVCS and a gain of approximately 40% (Trex 450).

When i switch on my trex, the GY401 does not initialise correctly and i get a blinking red light on the gyro in place of a solid red light. I'm sure that it must be related to the transmitter because when i do the same with my FF7, it initialises properly.

Any suggestion are welcome...

Thanks !

M.
