You won't lose the models. As long as you are going to replace the battery, I would go with a LiPo TX battery. You get LOTS of flying time without recharging. The only down side is you will need to pull the battery to charge it, (no big deal since you won't need to charge often).
You can get the battery here:

There are IONs available as well. No nee to pull the battery charging them. They work very well. 15 to 17 hours of run time per charge.

If your good at electronic stuff, here is a link to mod the TX so it doesn't drain the battery as fast.
The purpose of this project is to replace the voltage regulation solution in a Spektrum DX6 transmitter with a more efficient one. In doing so you can more than double the runtime of the transmitter. This is a surprisingly simple project, and anyone with average soldering iron skills can do it.

Although the mod is for a DX6, it works on the DX7 as well. Did it last month, and it seems to work good.
On another note, has anyone had any problems running the 11.1v lipo's in the DX6/DX7 TX since this is above the 9.6v that the original battery supplies?

I did the voltage regulator mod as well. It helped a lot.

Is that the Dimension Engineering regulator? How much improvement did it provide?

Has anyone tried the evo-tx 1500 3s battery for the dx7?? It seems like the way to go for replacement for the dx7 tx

I used an old hyperion litestorm red 2100 3s pack, (basically like a TP pro-lite) it fit's like a glove, and it lasts at least a couple weeks flying a couple packs a day. I hardly ever need to charge the tx anymore. I didn't need to do the dim-eng mod on the dx7 either, so no possible warranty isues. Interestingly enough, with the lipo in there, fully charged gets the battery indicator pretty much all the way to the right side, almost as if they meant it to use a 12.6V (fully charged) pack :)

Hmm - i'm having a problem with my DX7 battery as well - it has the std 1500mah nimh battery and get only about an hour out of it - it's a real pain.
So I would like to use one of my cheap T-Rex batteries (ebay 2200mah 20c 11.1V)...
Obviously I don't want to discharge the lipo too much so how do you guy go as far as knowing when the battery is too low?
Is the current cutout in the DX7 too low for a lipo - do you recharge before the DX7 starts beeping or is that still a good indicator without damaging the lipo with too far a discharge ?

ReadyHeli.com is now carrying the new Infina-Ion packs for the Spektrum/JR line of radios.
These packs consistently turn out 16 hours of flight/setup time without having to recharge.
They should be in stock within the next few days.

Update to my post above!
I finally ordered a JR type lipo transmitter battery off ebay - so far last for ages...
Been flying at the club and also the park several times and have not recharged yet! Normally I would have had to recharge after one park visit...
The one I got was like this - cost $27AU delivered! ;

Thanks.
Will this fit in the TX and still be able to close the back cover?

Hmm, I just assumed it would. (Assumptions are the mother of all stuff-ups :arggg:)
Jockstrap will need to answer that though.
I'll know when mine arrives, but that will be in around a week.

Here is a link to one the same seller is selling at the moment...

Fits perfect into the back of the DX7 - like it was made for it! Back cover closes fine and it's such a nice snug fit it doesn't move around or anything...
@bigglesworth - just checked your link - same seller :) so should fit like a glove..
