David... I thought I read a post from her that said she was wrong and it would be 2048?

Steve,
Yes we found out the 8 channel will use the 2048 resolution also.

PCM to 2.4 with a module can be faster (less latency) since the PCM encoding is fairly slow.
A module with be slower than direct. The DX6 wasn't truely an integrated system, it was an internal module. It took the radios PPM stream then converted to digital for 2.4 transmission. You can't take the RF board out of a DX7 and stick it in radio like the DX6 setup allows.
With the Spektrum module, the same thing happens. In the DX7 and X9303 the stick position is directly encoded into the digital 2.4 stream, no double conversion.
The 12X module system (both 72 and 2.4) all encoding happens in the module, so the 2.4 module should be the same latency as the integrated system.

With the Futaba 12's and 14Z that use a module for 2.4 ghz. There is no conversion of a PPM stream. The software update allows the radio to be the same as an intergrated RF deck. So nothing is loss. The module is just an RF deck, same thing in the intergrated radio, it is an RF deck that is just soldered in.
The processor(computer, epprom, what ever your want to call it) in the radios is what determines the resolution and latency.
The radio really does not know if the RF deck is hardwired or plugs in.

David the non-Futaba modules (XPS and Spektrum) come with no software updates that I am aware of. I would guess, unless Futaba told them how to do it, that it would have do some conversion. No?

Dog,
Your correct. Even with the 9C, 9Z. Those two radios would be seeing a PPM pulse to feed the 2.4 module and only have 8 channels available. No matter who makes the module to go into those radios.
I believe that is why aftermarket companies really do not push there 2.4 modules for the 12's and 14 of Futaba. Once they found out Futaba was going to do there own module and not degrade the functionability of the radio any. I mean even with XPS or Spektrum module being used in the Futaba 12's or 14. The user would only have 8 channels that could be used. It would be same as using a module in the 9C. The processor is a lot better in the 12's and 14. So would gain some processing over the 9C with a 2.4 ghz module.
Got to remember, Futaba and JR are headquartered in Japan. In Japan FAI type flying is what drives the hobby in Japan. So these two companies are going to make there upper level radios module based. They do that so the owners can take there radios any where in the world and fly with them at events. They can accomplish that by changing the module and changing frequency bands. Would be difficult to do that with an intergratd RF deck. 2.4ghz is not legal everywhere for RC use yet. Japan is one of the countries that does not allow 2.4 ghz for Radio Control at this time.

OK, so the software update changes the radio to do the stick position to digital data stream for the 2.4 transmission?

I guess you can say that. You set the modulation in the tranmitter program to be 2.4ghz. You then select multi channel mode ( 8 ch and 14 ch rxs) or 7 channel mode.
Same thing is done where on 50 mhz, 72 mhz, or what ever band module happens to be in the radio.
The processor in the transmitter is sending the information directly to the RF module. The RF module transmits the information to the receiver. Does it the same way where the module is hardwired or removable.

Dog.. are you sure about this? Becuase I know that you can buy 2.4ghz futaba equipment in Tokyo, although nothing above 4 channels - mostly 3 channel stuff only.

Yes I found out that they just recently started allowing 2.4 ghz for ground vehicles that are RC. They don't allow 2.4 ghz for RC aircraft yet.Since this is RC Heli forum, I just thought it would be understood that no 2.4 ghz for aircraft.

I'm in the market for one but living in Australia will have to wait until at least March 2008 to buy one locally.
Is it worth the wait?
By way of background - I've got a Logo 500 3D sitting on the bench with everything except Tx/Rx and am anxious to get it in the air. I haven't bought an alternative Tx/Rx because I'm only in the market for one and would think it a good idea to get a high end one which means it will be good for some time to come.

Hey Ozsteel, I'm an Australian, and I've got a 12FG that i bought while I've been living oversea's in Korea. I've found out that the tx are region coded through these forums, so I can't just buy any 2.4 module - i have to get one that's compatible. What I'm saying is if you are going to use it in Australia, then buy it in Australia.. there is not fix for the region coding on the 12FG yet.. its a great radio. and 2.4 would be great.

Thanks - I've contacted Power Grunt Hobbies - hope it really is out by the 24th January! The Australian distrbutor told me that it would be out "sometime in March".

I have put the 6014fs reciever in my raptor50. Yes there is a difference compared to the old 72mhz. The servos move like they are connected directly to the radio. Now I see what all the hub-bub was about with the other 2.4ghz radios.
I can not wait till the weather gets better in Wisconsin. It is cold and snowing again.

I held one yesterday and was severely dissappointed in it. It feels very cheap, much like the cases Futaba makes for the Real Flight sim. I too have been waiting for this radio to replace my 9ZHPS. Futaba really dropped the ball on their customers with this radio. I'm glad I didn't preorder this thing. I'm actually considering switching to JR when their 12 channel is released. All my rx's have to be changed out anyway so it doesn't matter which brand I go with. I've been a Futaba guy since 1985 and I've been real happy and was very excited about this radio. Now, I want to beat the engineer who designed the case for this radio because no matter how good it preforms, it has to feel good to be good.
Did you guys notice how they changed the photo on the website. The original pics showed the antenna integrated with the radio, now it is behind the radio as a plug in....WTF?

If the intent is to compare the 12FG to a radio, it should not be to the 10x or 12x. It's more like the x9303 for Futaba or the upgrade/equal to a 9Z.

The upper end radios are not heavy anymore. The manufactuers are using batteries that weigh less that the 9.6 volt nicad that have been used in the past. There is a lot of people think that because radios are lighter that would mean that there is less quality. The 12FG is a great radio. I got to hold and check one out today. Compared to my 12Z, it has a lot of nice features for the money. Just a little heavier than the 12Z, because the Z uses 2 cell Lithium Ion pack. The FG uses a 6 cell nimh battery.

I went to the dark side and purchased a JR X9303 2.4Ghz system. It is considerably different and has one item I consider a flaw. There is no way to get a engine kill programmed into the system. I think that the engine kill is a very important safety feature. When discussing this with JR tech support I was informed that they didn't think it was important but would relay my concerns to management.

Well on my JR DSM9X (aussie version of the 9303) i can certainly have a throttle kill switch and i can also set the failsafe to kill the engine if the inevatable happened so I am unsure what you mean i am confused by your post RTDillon????

I have a 12FG and like the feel, I have small hands and can reach the switches better. It seems like everthing comes in plastic and is lighter now days.

I want to be able to set up a separate switch that will kill the engine no matter what flight mode I am in or where the collective stick is at. I could set up the throttle hold to actually kill the engine at the expense of auto practice and you are also right about the failsafe. I would like to fight all the way down just without engine. For example, a friend lost elevator control on his raptor. In that case I would like to be able to cut the engine, go to center stick, and then try to get the bird down using rudder and aileron control. I'd still crash but at least I would not have to worry about a funky chicken when it hit. :-)
I just purchased a Futaba 12fg so have returned to the light. LOL I just sold my DX7 and will be puttinng the 9303 on here shortly.
