I went to my local hobby shop and they are carrying the Hurricane 550 Basic kit with motor and speed controller for $299. Is this a good deal or am I better off dealing with online sellers? TY

Hi;
Got my 550 online with motor, speed controller and bec for $319. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Can I get away with using a DX6/Futuba 6 channel transmitter or is something like a spectrum DX7 the way to go. Currently Im looking just to be doing sport flying and hoping to eventually get into some 3D.

I fly my 550 on a Futaba 6EXH - a 6 channel Tx. I only fly FF and lazy eights

the dx6 is a better tx, but i'm using a futaba 6exh and that works fine. the price on some of spektrums rx's is scary though.

DX6 is OK, I personally don't like the 6EXH which doesn't have sub-trim, making setup harder. The new DX6i looks like a sensational choice for a budget 6ch setup, better than the DX6 and far superior to the 6EXH.

However a DX7 is only about $50 more and probably the most popular choice by far over just about any other radio over the past 12 months. The Spektrum 6ch rx are only about $50 which I don't think is so scary myself.

And if you look around, you can get 6100s for $40.

i've never actually looked for a deal, but i've seen some spektrum rx's going for upwards of $90-$100. i guess that's not the norm.

The 9 channel is pretty steep in price. The AR7000 can be bought for about $75.

There are people out there selling them for very large dollars. :)

Probably better not to make generalisations or criticisms of any product if you have not done the research. There are seven different Spektrum Rx ranging from 6ch to 9ch. Prices are obviously higher for the Rx with more features and channels. They are cheaper (and lighter) than comparable Futaba FASST Rx.
