View Full Version : 980kv Z-Power motor...Any updates
Anybody have any updates on this ( http://flying-hobby.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=18_76&products_id=1018 ) motor on 2200mah packs? I'm wondering if there have been any long term users of it.
Also, how much more performance can I expect over the stock motor? I am hesitating on going to the 1100kv since I want to stay with smaller packs. Also, can I stay with the stock esc?
I'm not sure what the kv of the stock motor is, I've read a couple of different things (800 & 850). My kit is from last summer and the stock motor has the bronze colored ends.
Thanks guys!

I dont use 2200 packs but I can tell you the Z20 motor would suit these packs better then both the stock motors. I would order a kit without motor and ESC and buy them separately. Z20 and Align 75A ESC is a good match and gives you head room to go to a Z30 at a later date if you want.

I have had about 12 flights on my upgrade with a Z20 980 KV and 2500 EVO. I added an Align 75A ESC I get about 4.5 min of light 3D with the 2500s. The only problem I had was with tail wag that wasn't there with the stock motor. Finless finally figured ti out that because I was using gov with the Align ESC and shouldn't. That fixed the problem. I just got two EVO 3300 but haven't tried them yet. I haven't tached it yet but I think I'm getting arount 2400 head speed and I like it. I was only getting 1800 with the stock motor but I got 5 min flight time with stock FP 2200 that I used on my Trex.

I use the govenor on the Align ESC without an issue. Set and forget at 90%. I plug the packs in, switch to idle up 1 and dont turn it off until the end of the flight. Tail is rock steady (401 Gyro and matching servo)

I couldn't get rid of the tail wag after I upgraded to the Z20 and 75A ESC. When Finless found out I was using gov with the Align ESC he said there have been problems with the Align gov on the 75A? I took it out and it has been fine ever sence....Go figure.:dontknow

Here is the thread where Bob discusses the Align ESC

So, has anybody tried all 3 motors, the stock one, the 980kv Z20 and the 1100kv (RCP, Z Power, etc.)? I know what the power is like on the stock motor, and what the power is like on the 1100kv motors, just wondering if the power from the 980kv Z20 is where I expect it will be.
Has anybody ran the stock ESC on the Z20 motor, will it hold up?

Z20 is no powerhouse so don't go for this motor if wild 3D is your thing. It is marginally more powerful then the stock 850kv motor but way more efficient and runs so cool no matter what I throw at it. I found running the 15 tooth pinion puts the power about in between the 850kv motor and the 1100 kv motor. Running time ends up being similar to the stock 850 motor on a 14 tooth pinion. I hate how hot the Gaui motors get. They give me no confidence in relation to their longevity and I hate wasting power in heat.
Still think the the Z20 is the best compromize between power and running time. This being said, I am about to order a Z30 to compare.

How do we differentiate from a Z20 from a Z20A? I have one that has the Z-Power and A-Series etched on top of the motor but nothing else. Can anyone help ?
