Hello Helifreakers,

What is wrong with my engine? (OS 50 hyper with hatori #522)
http://media.putfile.com/Metal-engine-noises

Here is the story in short:

- Had no problems with my own engine.
- Bought a used engine to try something out.. After installing that engine made this sound..
- I placed my own engine back in. But again, this sound.
- Tried a other engine from a friend, no strange metal sounds, just ok (os non hyper)
- Replaced the bearings of my own engine.. Still that metal sound.
- Bought a new engine (the one in this movie), also the metal noises...

So, if its not the engine? Is it the pipe? The pipe is brand new!
How can I check without trying some other pipe?

How come I did'nt have this sound with the non hyper engine?
I'm confused..

Thank you very much,

Chief

Sounds like a clutch issue to me. Are you using the same clutch and fan hub when you swap out engines? Are you swapping out pipes whenever you swap out engines?

Another place I would look would be the bearings, but you said that you replaced them already.

Another place to look would be the back plate and see if the crank/ rod assy is contacting the backplate? Doubtful, but I wouldnt hurt to look.

Good luck and keep us infomed!

At first it sounds like the clutch bell rattling back and forth. But who knows, it's a heli with a lot of parts. Make sure everything is tightened and there's no loose screws anywhere.

Thank you for the replies!

Sorry for the late answer..
I was waiting till I could test the engine with a other pipe. (stock raptor pipe)
I did the test today.. I hate to say: Still the metal noises...

You can hear it here:

Wait until after idle.. when i spool up agian, you can hear it clearly. (0:22 sec)

I will take a look at my clutch area and bearings soon.
How can there be play in the clutchbell when the clutch grabs the bell?

Thanks again,
Chief

Well, it could be that the clutch lining is gone or parts of it is missing/thin and the clutch is grabbing or scrapping the inside of the bell.

Good luck, I hope you solve the problem soon.

Chief, sounds like the clutch lining is gone or very thin. When you throttled down, there was no noise. The clutch isn't engaging the clutch bell when you throttle down. So it sounds like the metal clutch is engaging the metal clutch bell when you throttle up. Are your screws tight that hold the clutch to the spool? Maybe they're allowing some play with the clutch. It has to be a clutch noise.

Sounds more like a bearing in the starting line is very notchy. How does it feel when you rotate the start adapter by hand?
