My first ever R/C helicopter flight were completed yesterday on my Spectra-G :D I did a total of two flights. The winds were about 15mph, so it wasn't't ideal conditions but everything worked great. All I did was tail in hovering. I let the engine cool for about an hour between flights. I'm very happy with it. I do have a couple of questions regarding my pitch curve and throttle curve. I currently have my normal mode pitch curve at -2 (20% throttle), +5 (mid-stick) and +8 (90% throttle) as per the MA Operators manual. My 7 point throttle curve at 0, 18.5, 25, 28.5, 32.5, 44.5, 100. I noticed that when I was hovering that if I lowered the throttle/pitch stick slightly (it seemed very sensitive) that the heli would drop somewhat rapidly and I had to raise the throttle/pitch stick allot to stop the decent. I think my pitch curve is off. Do I need negative pitch in my normal mode pitch curve? Any suggestions? One other thing I noticed is that when I would raise the throttle/pitch stick rapidly that the tail would kick to the left about 25% then hold that new position. I'm using a 601 Gyro. Any suggestions for how to correct this?

Thanks in advance for the help,

Chris

Rapid descent is partially due to lack of pitch down at mid stick, and lower throttle at hover pitch and below.
I setup My 13 Y/O son's heli with -8, 0, +9 with a linear throttle curve from zero to 100. -2 degrees is not enough to descend with forward speed, or winds of 5 -8 MPH and up. (tried that, almost shut the motor off to drop.)
If you expect to learn and fly 3D in the future, go for -9 to +9 with 0 at mid stick and adapt yourself and learn collective management early. I'd guess that 40% throttle at mid stick would be a good starting point, you can add or reduce throttle from there to get the headspeed you want.
BTW: wind under 30 MPH is not as critical for the larger machines, just prepare yourself to use the left hand to maintain altitude. Wind over the rotor disk is the same as air passing over it in forward flight. Ideal conditions are when the windsock still has room to fill! :)

Good advice from Lamebird but 40% at mid stick on a gasser might be a bit high. The numbers you posted look like they should be close.

Thanks for the advise :)

Do a search for "Gasser throttle settings" and you'll find what you need plus more. ;)

I said I was guessing at the 40%...;)
At least it'd fly...

Hey Wayne, Did you get the TR gearbox upgraded yet?

Might want to do that. Here's the post with info. The deal

OK, I have the word as of this morning. All SpectraG open gear boxes should have the TR shaft and gears replaced. Send the box to MA and they will warrantee both as soon as the new shafts come in. If you have an open gear box on ANY other model, you can send it in for gear only replacement under warrantee. The new gears are gray in color. The black gears should not be flown in any moderate to high stress application and should be changed out as soon as possible for all TRs.
All new kits will have the new shafts included. If the kit has already been shipped, the open TR should be sent back for update which should be very quick once the shafts come in.
Sorry, I have no other info to pass on. Hope this helps.
