Buy a nice kitchen count down timer. That will work fine.

You can use a meter between your charger and pack while charging to read the mAH put back in the pack.

I prefer to have both curves the same from mid stick up (as per Finless), so run 40 - 45 - 50- 75 - 100 on the Normal pitch curve. That means at mid stik or above the heli doesn't jump with flipping to Idle Up.

Hi Pinecone,

I'll get this nice kitchen count down timer ! thanks for the tips. I'll get the topic on my curves on T500 forum as it's a bit out of this topic.

Fantastic Trex 500 build videos Bob - well done for all the time and effort you must have put in and many thanks again for the detailed explanations and points to watch - these videos really are incredibly useful. One quick question - when building my Trex 600e I put the grommets on the cyclic servos as your 600 videos suggested. Being big headed I put my 500 servos on without looking at the video first :arggg: only to then watch the video and find you dont use them. Should I take them off my 500 and 600 as the screws will go through further and make the cyclic servos more solid?

Thanks in anticipation

You dont need the grommets on an electric heli so I would remove them expecially if your servo angles are farther out because of them or as you say the screws are barely holding.

I am working on setting up the throttle and pitch curves in a DX6i and it wants the pitch values in % instead of degrees. DOes anyone know what the % pitch curves are for position of the stick on the DX6i? Just asking so i donthave to do the math.

THanks all

There is no math and all radios do it in %. You have to use a pitch guage to read the actual pitch of the blades and adjust the percent until you get what you want.

You might want to watch my throttle and pitch curves 101 video here:

Alright, I need help with the pitch curves
I watched the pitch and throttle videos and i fully understand what a pitch curve is and why. i just can seem to get a correct curve for my 500. I used your recommended throttle and pitch curves and i get positive pitch at 0 stick and I get 5-6 degrees at 50% stick and at full stick it goes beyond +12 degrees. I adjusted the pitch curve so at 0 stick its -2 and adjusted it from there. but when I apply full stick travel it just doesnt seem very smooth or fluid. I am at 100% end play values.
for normal flight what are you other 500 pilots using for pitch and throttle curves?

On my set up at 30% at zero stick i am at +4 degrees. I did check my servos and linkages. All are set to what Align wanted as far as end to end length and they are level at 50%.

OK you got your head mechanical; not right then. Swash sounds too high.
GO watch my CCPM setup #1 and #2 vids for how to get all your head arms, links, etc set up. Yes those are for the Trex450 but the ideas are the same.

Bottom line go back and make your pitch curve linear 0,25,50,70,100 then watch the vids and get your swash height correct sand arms level so at center stick you have 0 pitch. If you got that all correct then you should have the same amount of positive pitch at full stick as you have negative pitch at low stick. THEN to adjust how much pitch at low and high stick use the swash menu and increase or decrease the pitch amount.

Thanks. I get on it tonight.

Bob,
I went back and looked at all the linkages and i did adjust the shorter flybar ones so they touched eyelet to eylet. I aslo noticed i had the mixing arm to blade grip linkages a "tad" to short. the manual calls for 24 mm between inside to inside and I was at 20. I adjusted these and then i looked at my servo to swash linkages and they were at the factory recommended mm. at 50% stick travel i was not level but was above it. I shortened the servo to swash links close to 20 turns and now they are 18mm id to id. I know have pitch and travel close to perfect. cross my fingers
I tried to locate the CCPM setup vid's but i cant locate any named CCPM setup.
Sorry to be a bother and thank you for your advice.

No p[orblem... go into the Trex 450 build vids and that are labeled CCPM setup #1 and 2.

Just a quick note, When installing the reciver tray the two screws that come with the kit are about 1/4 inch too long. Bob in his video build used the two extra washers on his. But align no longer includes them in the kit.( at least mine didn't have them), So I just cut off a couple of servo arms for spacers. Hope this helps

Bob,
Happy to report that after your advice and double checking all the links and following your pitch curve the bird has flown. I had to adjust the top and bottom pitch setting slightly but smooth as silk. My only problem now is that the JR770 and JR8900 rudder servo are so fast and I am so slow, once again they are better than I. Ha. Thank you again for your time and effort.

Hi Bob,
New in the heli thing. Building the T rex 500 is not as daunting anymore thanks to you. I do have questions regarding the servo set up video section. How were you able to draw power to the servo and the receive? I got a futaba 7 c transmitter with receiver but had to exchange the servo that came with the kit for the recommend ones however it did not come with any battery for the reciever,. Do I need the battery at this time. If so how do you connect them? Or can I do the set up once the whole heli is built.

Thanks for the vidoes!!!!

I use a 4 cell nicad pack for setup on the bench and for video purposes... Keeps me from worrying about spooling up by accident. Anyway the ESC comes with a BEC so when you plug the ESC into the throttle channel it POWERS the radio and servos. Thus you do not need a separate battery to fly....

For setup just remove your pinion or unplug 2 of the motor wires for safety.

Hey I got a JR G7703D and the paired 8900. HOw do I or can I mount a full size servo on my 500

I use a Logictech 6100T full size combo, just buy and mount a tail servo bracket from a T600E and you´re home free.

Big Thanks for the build videos Bob, Just finish my 500 build using them. You sure have made life a bit easier, for us newbies on theses electrics. Got a couple of questions. I am using HS-5245MG With theses digital servos, What about ccpm interaction? Do I use the same proceedure with the bubble level as I used on the 450 vedios? Are is it not really needed? Question number 2. On the step down voltage regulator for the tail, 9257 servo does it plug in between the Servo & the wire that comes from the 401 gyro. That is where I think it goes. But the lousy instructions that came with it says to plug it in the reciver, Don't think that can be done that way. Sorry about the dumb question, Just never had a need to use a stepdown voltage regular before. Thanks for any info.

Would a 601 with a 9251 servo be to big for the 500???

Finless

Yes you can follow the same procedure for removing CCPM interactions as I show for the 450.

Yes the step down goes between the gyro and the tail servo.

I have seen some folks use a 601 and 9251 but it does make the heli more tail heavy and you are adding weight... I say if you got one use it but get larger batts like 25C 3300's to help balance the heli.

Bob,

Many thanks for an excellent series of videos. This was my first "real" heli and the build was a real pleasure. Your added expertise got me light years ahead doing radio, gyro, and head setup. I now have a beautiful 500 that's waiting for some pitch measurements with a gauge and then a maiden. I'm hoping to do that this afternoon at an indoor location since it's blowing at 30 mph outside today.

BTW, the 500 kit I got came with all the spacers I needed to use the 5245 MG servos. I got it in late January. Thanks Align for paying attention.

Just had to compliment you Bob for an excellent and helpful build series that plain words do not describe how helpful you really are. Please accept my most humble thanks for making my first (by myself) heli build a total success. You made it a breeze! This 500 will join my 450 and 600 Trex' but will be my favorite because I built it totally. Thanks again. EK.
