I took my Hurricane out for a gentle tootle around today, I had forgotten how nicely it flies. It is about 0.5 degrees celsius here today (32 Farenheit). As well as my flight times being shorter I had to use more throttle to hover - is this normal ? Will I do my lipos any harm using them when it is this cold ?.
Cheers,
Mike.

I have flown my Trex 450 in temps around the 10 degrees f. with no problem, the lipo's you need to keep in your pocket to keep them warm till you use them. I don't know that i have seen any drop in flight time unless the packs are too cold. Generally performance is better when it's colder nice crisp air.

cold air, being more dense creates more lift. or something like that. i usually time my flights 1 minute shorter in cold weather-which we have alot of right now. it sucks.

I don't fly bellow -10°C as it is the limit for my GY401 gyro.
Otherwise, yes you have more lift for the same amount of collective as the air is denser... but... you also have more drag on the blades, a lot more. Plus, your battery has a lower capacity with lower temperatures, thus, like concept1 said, keep the packs warb untill you start up. After that packs will maintain their own temperature for the length of the whole flight.

I live in the tropics and it is too cold if.
1. I have to buy a jacket
2. I cant sit on my balcony in my underwear
3. I have to install a heater in my Hilux
4. I have to use a 'proper' wetsuit for diving
5. The wife has to wear more than a bikini top and shorts all year around

Hard decision...."fly or stay with the wife and swim"?....my answer would be to "fly first"...then swim with the wife....!!
And Bob....Pleeeease...do not post one of you in your skivies....some things just don't need to be in pictures.....now post one of your heli...that is something we all want to see.

You can see my Hurri under 'post your 550 pic here and my other bird (who is having time off after an unscheduled meeting with mother earth) is shown under 'Hurricane Batteries' I will not expose my shreddies (unless bribed with something shiney) you will be glad to hear! Are heli pilots like Magpies? Here is a picture of a few of my wifes friends at a recent party...perhaps this will warm you up abit while you endure winter!
