Hi guys, Im really excited to get to post to a miniature group.. just got my razor 600e in the air! Castle hv-85, and the hacker a50 with miniature's recommended gear ratio. I did about 2 minutes of test hovering today in 40 degree weather, and noticed the motor was really hot. almost too hot to touch. The packs were perfectly cool, the speed controller was warm..

Is this normal? I assume not, if so, what could be wrong? My throttle curve is linear, -100% to 100%, the controller is set pretty conservatively, heli fixed endpoint, slow cutoff, no brake, slow start, 13mhz for the motor timing thing..

Im also using a 14mz radio, if that makes a difference (hidden setting perhaps?) The only issue I know for sure is I have to turn the trim all the way down to get the speed controller to arm, and it doesnt seem to capture full throttle -- Ive asked how to fix this in the 14mz section -- but i dont think that would impact here, unless its throttling up way more than it should?

If anyone could cast some light on what Im missing, Id appreciate it. I really want to do a 'real' flight with this heli, its 3 months in the making now, but Id hate to fry my shiny new bird.. If anyone has a castle program and would be willing to share, that'd be great also.

I never ever got my hackers to run cold

However, that said, I suggest you try "Low Advance" as timing since that will affect heat generation the most.

Yes my Hacker ran very hot.

Changed out to a Z-motor A50/800. Much cooler running now.

My hacker motor always ran hot (close to 200). That just seems to be the way they run :-(

As for the Castle ESC, it sounds like your ATV is not set correctly. First off... I would disable the throttle trim in all flight conditions. This is especially true if you are running in governor mode on the ESC. The throttle trim will just get you in trouble.

Before we get started, please remove the blades just to be a little safer for setting the ATV on the Castle ESC.

To set the ATV correctly, I start with the throttle in ATV at 50% both sides with the limits at 140% both sides on the 14MZ/12Z radios. I also go make one of the flight modes have a linear throttle curve that goes to the extremes. This will probably be your normal curve. I then set the throttle stick to full. Turn on the Tx and Rx and then plug in the main batteries. The ESC should just sit there. Now increase the high throttle ATV until the ESC goes into program mode. Unplug the main batteries and add about 5% more to that number. Test again by plugging in the main batteries. The ESC should go right into program mode. Unplug the batteries again.

Now we are going to do a similar thing for the low end ATV. Set the throttle stick to low (and full low trim if still using that) and plug in the main batteries. The ESC should do nothing. Now increase the low side ATV until the ESC arms. Unplug the batteries and add an additional 5% like before. Plug in the main batteries again to test. The ESC should arm. Unplug the main batteries again.

The ATV should now be set correctly for the Castle ESC. I think you will find the numbers are going to be in the 120% range or higher.

Hopefully this made sense and will help you!

Ours is around 185 degs. Hacker told me as long as the motor is under 210 degs, it is OK.
