Hey guys, I've been looking into getting an N9, the only widespead problem is the tail rotor failing due to the bolts. Other than that from what I've read Im really excited about getting one... My Raptor 30, 50 and 60 all had the same type of tail design that could be put on the N9...

Take the bolts out and toss them, get a long (3x10-15mm) set screw locktite it in and use a 3mm locknut and washer to hold the grips on instead of a 3mm bolt...

Think this might work? Just tryin to help

Jake,

There is room for a 3mm locknut within the blade grip but I haven't found the need to change my setup. The thing is I have hundreds of flights on both my N9s and they have the stock hubs, screws, and washers. Also the guys in my area don't do anything special to the tail and we haven't had all the problems reported on the N9 tail. I would recommend you not use the SAB 105mm tail blades provided and instead use Vs or Radix tail blades. The tail drag is higher with the SABs. I run the 105mm Radix but make sure you keep the tail out of tall grass. I lost a set of tail gears dragging the tail blades a few many times (during autos) but even then I never had problems with the hub or blade grip screws.

Regards,

Charles

The 3mm lock nut is just insurance. The folks that had the problem, used the lock nut and the problem went away. I have them on mine. Just thread up a lock nut to the top of a 12mm shcs top side first. You will probably never have a problem till the updated hub comes out.

Sorry to bump this thread.
I haven't had a problem with mine but I've heard of it happening so I'm getting a bit concerned.

Can you explain what you mean about the 3mm locknut?

From what I gather, you remove the blade grip cap screw & washer, remove the washer from the cap screw, screw the 3mm locknut up to the end of the new (longer) cap screw (nyloc nut??) refit the washer, then fit the new cap screw assembly to the hub.

Is this correct?

If not, can somebody please post a pic?

Cheers.

Guys please explain. I am ready for the maiden of my Synergy and want to be sure of what are you talking about. Pics will be great too.

Thanks

I don't do this on my Synergy but I quite understand the idea here.

Basically, the idea is to use longer shcs's like 12mm. Each will screw through a clocknut and then into the hub on each side. I think no washers in this case are needed.

12mm schc -- clock nut -- (thurst br -- radical br -- hub -- radical br -- thurst br) -- clock nut - 12mm schc

I fixed the problem myself by using the highest graded schc (stainless steel) with machined washers (Thunder Tiger's).

Great, so no need of a washer between the locknut and the thrust br?

ive fitted a kasama tail hub assembly safe in the knowledge that they are lovely cnc machined ally grips and dual bearings too. much better design with no play unlike the standard grips (plus much beefier bolts retaining the grips in the hub)

Thanks I'm well aware of the Kasama tail.
There has also been reports of the tail not holding as well with the Kasama setup.

I thought this thread was about a temporary fix for the standard issue tail assembly until the updated hub comes out, not for discussion of replacement options. ;)

The new updated hub is supposedly more locked in & precise than anything else, so I'm looking forward to it's release.

Thanks Long Nguyen K, I understand the concept of the locknut now.

I found the problem to be the screw itself being of low quality, not synergy's fault, just crappy hardware, replace the stock screw with a high quality grade screw from a fastener supplyer such as Mcmaster Carr.

The locknut fix worked for me but I definitely agree another radial bearing is needed.

Would the Hypergrips for the tail fix this problem???

Synergy have the long tail hub & dual bearing upgrade kit released now.

P/N 600-323

or

N9 SE Complete metal tail assembly 600-324

Can't find them here in the UK....

Will the Hypergrips fix the problem????

The new HyperGrips for the Tail have 3 radial bearings so they would prevent side loading of the hub screw. I have not flown them or talked to the hyperdudes but I believe the answer to your question is Yes.
