View Full Version : so who has tried the hurricane 200??
Any one got one of these yet??
Whats the build quality like?
hows it 3d on 2s ??
how stable is it compared to say a trex 450??
This thing looks like the perfect backyard basher if it flies ok.
Thanx for your replies

I am still a relative newbie to the hobby and I got a TRex600E last summer and have about 100 flights on it, so I am still learning and no expert. When winter came, I wanted to get a heli with all of the capabilities of the Trex so I could practice indoors, instead of just on a simulator. I got a Hurricane 200 about a month ago, and so far, here is my two cents:
Pros:
- The heli seems to be very well made and designed with lots of metal parts so there is minimal "slop" in the head and tail.
- It is very small
- Parts and batteries are cheap
- Lots of power and very nimble and responsive
- This heli seems like it will do anything a very large, expensive 3d heli will do
Cons:
- As a very small heli, it can be "twitchy" at times and took a long time to set it up properly and calm it down
- Due to its small size, it can be challenging and delicate to work on and repair (feels at time like repairing a watch)
- It is much more challenging to fly than a larger heli, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first heli to an inexperienced flyer. I actually wanted it to be challenging so it would make me better on my Trex, so maybe this really isn't a "con".
Learnings:
- If you get one, don't get cheap servos and gyro. I bought mine with "no-name" analog servos and a very basic piezo gyro. I just couldn't get the set-up right, the servos were twitchy and the tail was a disaster. I ended up getting Hitec 45HB servos on the cyclic, a micro futaba ditial servo on the tail and a GY401 gyro, and it is like a completely different helicopter and MUCH better.
All in all, I have no regrets, I just wish I had a big gym attached to my house!
Here are some pics.

Hey CD,
Chopperbean's comments are accurate. Be very careful with the links. They are fragile and they must be free.
We have done 3D on 2S

I finished the build of my ep200 yesterday. I had a little trouble with the mounting for my 401 gyro. Initially I put a little carbon fibre plate under the boom, bolted to the mid plate. That worked OK but the arrangement put the gyro very close to the motor which made the tail twitch.
I discarded that idea and mounted the gyro on back of the heli above the boom. It sits on a CF plate which is epoxied to a CF box which sits between the upper side frames. It took all day to manufacture it from scratch but it was worth it in the end. The gyro sits a little higher than I would have liked but it works really well.
I was really suprised how smoothly the heli flies for such a small craft. It will even go hands off for a couple of seconds before starting to drift off.

Most people seem to be putting the gyro on the bottom plate just behind the battery pack, so just inside the frame.

I tried that but the FlightPower battery packs that I have are long and thin and take up this space. I also couldn't see how I was going to adjust the gyro with it inside the frame.
I must admit the current placement does look a little out of place but it seems to work well.

Have you tried balancing with those packs? On mine the pack will have to much further forward to get it even close.
And watch the gear mount screws. On mine the sharp points stick up and will destroy your pack.

Good point about the gear mount screws. The EvoLite pack is quite narrow and sits between the screws but it could move in flight and rub. I've put a little strip of the fluffy side of a sticky velro pad in there for the battery to sit on now.
Many thanks for pointing it out.

The build quality is great.
Haven't had it up side down yet, but seen vid by Rstacy ( cool )
Very stable if you can fly a trex 450 you will be albe to fly this.
I think its a good buy.

I recently purchased the EP200 and I love it! I have a 600 but the Ep flies handles great very close to a 450 and it really is small enough to hover around inside! although a set up error caused a crash the parts have been ordered and soon I'll be hovering around the house again. I bought it to practice control...I had it flying probably with in an hour..the futaba servos were to thick and the frame had to be trimmed. Honestly I'm pretty new to heli's but I would recomended this to newbies it's so much better than the peice of crap blade cp pro i bought it's not even funny! no offense to those who like the blade cp i'm just bitter about the money I blew on it..:-)

Got a few questions about the heli, so any help would be good so I can complete my order
1) After reading a few post and members recommendation, Im going with the HS45 on cyclic, 401/3154 gyro combo, Spektrum 6100 & 2s lipo and would like to know if I need to run a 5.1 regulator on the servos as they are rated 4.8volts and they might fry if I don't. Can anyone confirm this?
2) Should I go woodies or plastics on the blades?
3) Do I need anything else to complete the bird as Im buying overseas (Readyheli) and would like to get everything needed to get it going. I'm getting spares like blades (main/tail), shafts (main/tail), paddles, paddle rods, booms, belts, canopy, linkage set, main gear set and CF Fin and tail.
4) Anyone tried KP-95012-2 Kong Powers (specs posted below) as I can get them easily here and can someone tell me if the dimension are similar to the Gaui 200 7.4v 800mah battery?
Specifications:
● 7.4V/ 950mAh/ 12C (2S1P)
● Size:53(L)x30(W)x17(H)mm
● Weight:40g
● 12C(10.2A)Max Continuous. 18C(15.3A)Sustain.
Thanks in advance.

The 401 is a great gyro for sure but it just weighs so much, I have to suggest the 2100T as its about 1/3rd the weight. The servo that the 2100T comes with (if you get the combo) is a very nice servo. People complain that the 2100T is hard to set up, but its not, its actually quite simple. It also has the ability to set end points at both sides and the 401 doesn't.
HS45's are great for cyclic (from what I hear), I personally have the BMS306's on cyclic and have no complaints. I like the fact that the 306's lock themselves when not powered which is nice when getting them centered and the arms at 90, the 306's gears won't turn when tightening the arm back on, other servos I've used turn pretty easily when doing this. Don't know if that matters, just a thought.
You will not need a regulator.
Woodies or plastic? Chocolate or Vanilla? I wouldn't get the wooden blades unless they are the new ones with the plastic at the roots. The wooden blades are going to be faster (but less durable than the plastic blades) and there have been reports of them breaking at the root at speed. The plastic blades are very durable but a bit slower and prone to not being perfectly straight (not hard to fix, just bend em straight, did one of mine).
Pick yourself up a carbon fiber tube at your local hobby shop if you can. Use the carbon fiber tube to replace the stock tail link rod. The stock rod vibrates pretty severely in flight and this can and does cause the tail to do weird things at times. Replacing with a carbon fiber tube is easy and well worth it, it doesn't vibrate, at least not to the point were its a blur. Here are the dimensions of the tube, 4mm x 2.5mm x 130mm. It was cut down from 610mm. The links from the stock rod fit inside the tube, epoxy in place.
Also pick up a set of canopy mounts, the stock mounts are a pain. I used the Trex 450 mounts, they are a touch to long but you can grind down the ends a couple few mm if needed. I didn't grind mine down. Only bad thing is that the frame has to be taken apart to install them but its well worth it.
Thats about it, holler if you have any other questions.

I am flying gaui ep 200 for nearny 3 months. I am also using ordinary standard cheap servo's and walkera G011 gyro and amazingly, it flys very well, the gyro hold the tail solid rock so do the servos too.

no regulator needed for the hs 45's
gaui batteries are the best i've used.
i haven't tried the woodies yet.
buy a set of see saw arms, and blade grips too. they will be destroyed after a few blade strikes.

I am also using the wooden blade it is great !
