View Full Version : Is my ESC in Govenor Mode?

This may sound like a silly question but I am begining to think my ESC (75amp gaui) may be in govenor mode - is there an easy way to tell or test?. My kit came with this esc and the 1100kv 1500W motor but didn't have any instructions for the esc other than in manual which was still for the 50amp esc. I have a throttle curve that is set at 0, 40, 80, 90, 97.5 (which is similar to my trex 450) but I seem to get a much greater drop in headspeed when I reduce collective than I would expect based on how the 450 reacts this makes the heli seems very 'pitchy' compared to the 450. I have changed the gearing (running my 2250mah trex packs in series) to a 16 tooth motor pinion an swapped out the front 42 tooth gear with a 61 tooth which should give me a max headspead of 1895rpm at 95% efficiency. Is my head spead to low making the heli appear 'pitchy' or could it be that the esc is in govenor mode - I only set the throttle range in the esc setup. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Jactor, I understand your problem, because the esc does not confirm your settings on each power up. Basically I just listen to the beeps and after the one I want I just go full throttle (this goes against all my safety sense!!) and then back to minimum throttle and you hear acknowledgement beeps after you have done that.
BTW, did you just swop you front 42T around with the back 61T to slow things down?

Hi Zoobie
yep thats exactly what I did - my heli has a 61 tooth gear on both the front and rear shafts. Had to file the frame a bit to get the front gear to spin freely - they are a little taller than the 42 tooth gears. Thanks for the tip wil go through the esc settings again and re confirm them although I think my manual may have the govenor/ no govenor settings listed the wrong way round as I have tried a flatish throttle curve 0, 50, 87.5, 87.5, 87.5 and there doesnt appear to be any noticeable bogging of the motor when flying. Will know for sure in a week or so when my eaglee tree data logger and rpm sensor arrive.
Cheers Jason
Based on your description, it looks like already in govenor mode.
The Gaui ESC manual has printed in reversed the setting for govenor, you need to set it to reverse.
If you want a govenor then you need to set to no govenor.

Which manual? I have heard that newer manuals are correct.
Here attached with the manual that I have.

I searched, and according to Finless 2-4 is non-gov
Yes, you are right. 2-4 is non-gov, my manual is wrong.

So 2-3 means the GOV is on (mine curretly says "heli without govenor 2-3), then my manual is reversed to. This is getting confusing.

So what is the stock setting for the gaui 75 amp? Governor on or governor off?

Yes. :)
The only thing you can do is reprogram for what you want it to be.

As Pincone said above - its in Govenor mode by default. Just had my Eagle Tree V3 arrive and tried it on the Hurricane. With my 1100kV 1500W motor and 16/61 tooth gearing up front, throttle curve set at 86% it pulls around 17A to hover and I got a peak of 32A (only very mild figure 8's and my crap flying) and used 1045mAh in a 4min 15sec flight. Couldnt hear any variation in headspeed so I am 99% sure its in govenor mode and based on the low power usage a max recording of 636W it spinning the blades faily slow (brushless rpm sensor hasnt arrived yet :( - hopefully soon) which I hoping why it feels very washing in the cyclic and the gyro doesnt seemto have a locked in feel anywhere near like my trex 450.
Looking at readyhelis HS calc at 95% eff with this gearing I should see 1895rpm and if 86% Govenor setting is 86% max headspeed (anyone know if this is the case?) then this equates to 1630rpm which I guessing is too low. I'm going to swap out the gearing to a 15 tooth pinion and 42 tooth front gear and looking at the readyheli calculator this should give me a maximum headspeed of 2581rpm which I'm going try to govern down to between 2067 at 80% or 1936 at 75%. Has anyone used the govenor does it work ok?
Will post again when I have given this a try and will upate as soon as my brushless rpm sensor arrives

How can I tell from my heli if it is in gov mode? I changed to the 2-4 setting (apparently non-gov) and my gyro now seems to have difficulty holding the tail (might be other issues as well), but it seemed better in the 2-3 setting. I have never used gov, butI understand the principle, is it really necc. on and electric heli?

Hi!
In which direction goes your tail?
If it's against the clock, try a few percent more for your throttle value.
