Hi!
@Cralis: Which Esc (Governor? what value?) / Motor / Lipos to you use right now? Pinion was the one that came with your kit, right?
3 1/2min sounds like something need too much power. The first thing would be to check your head speed. I bought a rpm checker for this. Was something around 20$. Values were pretty much the same I calculated before. Something around 10min should be no problem if you have the right setup. From what you wrote I think your setup is way too aggressive.

Klaus...what set up are you using to get 10 mins?
Cralis....the Z20 and 14t pinion is what I am going to start with....I'll get some real world stats once i get my Eagletree and Z20 motor. I really think the 1100 motor is much more than us non 3d flyers need and is way too tough on the lipos.
Remember when Gaui first came out they advertised using the Trex 2100 lipos....that was with the 890kv motor...since they have gone to the 1100 the 50a esc in no longer usuable and the 2100 packs are marginal...they have never changed there advertising.
The kit I bought came standard with 2 2200 18c packs..and they have puffed both times I have used them just hovering and that is with the 890kv motor.
I'm going for the Z20 and hopefully it will be much better.

Hi!
I'm using 5s 3900mAh 20C, 50A Gaui (80%), 15T pinion and Gaui 1100kV. It should be possible to get 11-12min (normal-flight) out of it without destroying them. But I'm just using 9 to 10 min. 1100kV with 50A Gaui Esc is pretty common here...

Sorry, Phoenix.. your post seemed more argumentative/taunting than informative. Thanks for the maths. I totally agree that you will probably get more flight time out of bigger better packs. I was asking IF they are pricey... I'm from South Africa where we have a VERY weak currency in international standards. Something that costs you $270, will cost me a bit more plus postage to South Africa and tax... Even if I could get it for $270, that is one HECK of a lot of money in South Africa. But thanks for the maths. I agree that it's better to have bigger packs - but I need to weigh it with the initial costs...
mjdee and worldofmaja.. thanks for that.
My setup is the 1100 engine, 75 ESC and Revolution 2100 18C packs, stock CF 550 blades... My curves are:
T: 0, 50, 75, 90, 100
C: 20 to 100 linear.
I think I am getting what the packs can give. I can't see how they can give more duration. So I think I need to order the Z20 (980) and the 14t. I have the 75A ESC... Can I keep that to use with the Z20, or do I have to get a new ESC as well?

I get 13,5 minutes on my hurricane when i'm scale flying (hovering, FFF) at 80% discharge capacity.
Z30 + Flight power LITE 5350 5S + 500 wood blades
Is this the pack you use? Only one in the heli?

I should have said with hard 3d the 50a esc can be overtaxed....as you can draw much more than 50A but if for a short period it should be OK.
It also seems like the guys using 5s lipos are getting really good times...is that because the motor is working at a better RPM? or becuase they mostly use BIG batteries...or a combo of both?

No, that is 4S, i use 5S. 5S is enough for scale flying and for a loop here and there. If you want 3D, go for 6S.

I'm sorry, that wasn't what i intended to do. I only wanted to show, bigger capacity brings more cost efficiency. I understand what you mean. Even USA vs. EU its like 100$ =100€ on our LHS. We pay 40% more for our hobby than in USA.

Also dont write off the Z20 as a low power only option. With 16 tooth and 100% govener is not a bad weapon and handles +10 -10 at around 2200 on the head. That give some very decent performance when you are ready for it.

Okidoki! Thanks guys.
No one has answered the question about the ESC and the Z20. Will the 75Amp one be OK for the Z20?

The Z20 will be OK with the 75a esc...you do not need to get another, it will draw less amps than the Gaui 1100 motor.
Someone did post they had problems with the Align 75a esc and a Z-power motor, But I haven't seen anything since.
You should be OK

Thanks guys... Trying to put in the order today... Quite excited! Really hope I can get better flight times.. The Hurricane seems quite a good heli.. Will get better packs too... Does anyone rate APlus? I hear mixed results... but from the people who seem to be very clued up - they're crap....

It really depends... from reading various tests about aplus, if you're doing beginner stuff it seams to be a cheap option. But as soon as you need a little bit more they seam to die quit fast!
I would invest in better ones. But that's just my opinion. The 5s lipos I use are not that expensive and work for me. Using 2x 3s would be cheaper if you're not taking better lipos like Kokam. These would be the ones I would choose if I'm going with a 6s setup.
