View Full Version : Flight Time Estimator
Guys,
Take a look at my very simple flight time estimator. I think this could be useful when selecting batteries. I based this on how much I've been putting back in my packs.
I'm sure it could benefit alot from some suggestions/improvements.
Whattya think??? (Be gentle ;) )

Hi!
Nice work but i think, the Flighttime is not a linear value. A 3200 Lipopack has
more weight then a 2100 pack. So the Heli need more power just to carry the
larger Pack´s and so the Heli can not just use the higher capacity only for
flighttime. So i think, there should be any value for the weight of a Pack.
Just my 2 Cents.
Regards,
Heimo
I agree, but I only have one size pack! If anyone else has some info on various sized packs we can adjust for that.
Great suggestion!

i really hope i get more then the three mintues that graph says. 13t pinion should help i hope.

I agree with the above statement about extra weight...etc.
It also is only valid for "Your" set up, you have to take into account pinion size, motor kva, blade size, type of flying, etc.
For each heli it will be different....I have found that you should buy the biggest batts you can afford if you want longer flight times.
Then you need to find the "sweetspot" for your set up with pinion, gearing, etc.
I just recieved my Eagletree and hopefully will be able to get some real data on the gaui 890 kva motor and the Z20a 980 motor. I would like to use several pinions and blades, but with the wx here and my work schedule it may take some time.

hopefully then the rcp 18 motor with a 13t pinion, rcp carbon blades, pheonix 60 esc and KP 2200 lipos will do ok. if not it looks like i'll be getting some flightpower 3300's. this would just be for hovering, ff and possibly some loops and rolls if i can grow a pair and just do it. i'm also running a separate servo/rx/gyro battery, 2 cell 2100mah pack. it's very light and i thought if i'm lucky doing that would extend flight time a tad, as the KP's will be powering the motor only.

Thank you for sharing Ron
Like others before me said, flight time denepnds on a number of factors. One is your gear setup, another the RPM and blade size+profile. GAUI blades are a thing of the past. The foil on the blades takes each and every flyer around 1 minute flight time. I tested this some time before, removed the foil and used an acrylic varnish to protect the surface. I got almost exactly one minute on 500 blades spining at 1800 RPM.
One more comment and i'll be quitet again :)
You named it Flight time estimator. Helicopters have a lot of difference in power requirement during hovering and forward flight. It's hard to estimate what the pilote will be doing. You could name the program "hover time estimator", and you won't have to graduate aeronautics to estimate the time.

Phoinix - can I just check what you are saying - taking off the blade cover gave an extra minute of flight time, is that correct ???
Have you tried the same with paint (rather than varnish) as I prefer them white rather than wood-colour
Cheers,
Mike.

This is what i did to my blades. Stripped them and painted.
And yes, you understood me correctly, i got extra minute on 1630 RPM flying 500 wood gaui blades.

Thanks Phoinix - I have a perfect pair of candidates - I'll give it a try.

Hi!
How about turbulences? The foil creates an even surface... perhaps something one should have in mind!
