I've already heard that solid plastic blades are bad news since they translate too much energy to the other parts causing a more expensive break. However I recently came across what seems to be a good deal on a number of blades for the cp which are plastic shelled and filled with foam. Should I give these a go or are they also bad?

Use the stock wood blades, they are usually well balanced, you won't destroy other head parts if you crash (usually) and they are pretty cheap. You will also get much better performance with the wooden blades than more flexible plastic ones.

The biggest problem with plastic blades are their tendency to chop the boom off on a hard landing. On a crash the blades will also bend enough to take out a gyro that happens to be mounted on top of the boom. Their great for hover training, I'll give them that, and they can take a beating, but the wooden blades sacrifice themselves and keep most other parts intact. You can get cheaper blades, the T-Rex ones cost less than the E-Flite ones and can be cut down to size , make sure they are balanced.
