Can the DS285 be upgraded to metal gear?

If so, is it a good idea to do this upgrade (to avoid gear striping) and what is the part number for the metal gear kit?

Thanks,

Kam

Yes, IIRC it is the gear set for the 241 servo.

Is it this one

http://www.readyheli.com/JR_Gear_Set_241_Micro_Metal_Gear_by_JR_Metal_Gears _p/jrpsg241mg.htm ?

It seems to have only 4 wheels. Do you use one plastic wheel from the stock DS285?

Thanks,

Kam

I guess. Here is the plastic gear set:

Thanks. I have used the DS285 plastic replacement gears more times that I am willing to admit. This is why I am considering switching to the metal gears.

BTW, the customer review at the link below (click on the Customer Review tab) says that the 241 metal gear does not fit the DS285. Anybody knows for sure if this is correct or not?

Anyone know if this is true? I was about to pull the trigger on the metal gear set too, but NOT if they fit....?

Thanks

If you search here, you will find several posts of people putting them in.

I just look at the package of the JRPSG241 metal gear set and it does include one plastic gear. As for it fitting one of the guys in my club put them in some JRPS285s and said the output gear presses on the pot shaft very hard but it does go on.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, the cases are sold as the same.... I wonder what could be so different? I guess a knowing "Freak" will have to tear into one!

Friggin' metal gears are spendy, I just ordered a set for $19 from ReadyHeli.

Well I had a crash this weekend with my 450 V2. Very small, but one of my 285's stripped. (I will never buy another plastic gear servo for cyclic).

Anyway, the gears work fine, it was an easy swap. The output gear does have a small plastic insert that goes onto the pot shaft. As stated above - I couldn't even get it to go on. What I did is found a drill bit that fit the original plastic output gear, then drilled the new gears plastic insert to that same size. It still went on the pot shaft very, very tight and now works perfectly.

Bottom line - the gears do work.

I'm buying a few more sets........

Just got off the phone w/ Horizon and gear kit part # is JRPSG241MG
They are also selling the DS285MG now $47.99. Wish we could get the metal gears for $12.00 a set!

Attached is a picture of the set. The fifth plastic wheel and the plastic insert are clearly visible.

I have two questions:

1. What screw should I used for the horn? (I have the screw for the plastic screw but it does not fit of course).

2. Since it is now metal on metal, do I need to thread lock it? (that is, the horn screw, not the metal wheels ;-) )

Thanks,

Kam

Kam,

1. The JR part number for the screws and washers is JRPA227. Otherwise the screw is a 3mm x 5mm screw.

2. The JR screws use a lock washer, but I also use thread lock on them. One of the guys in my club had the screw vibrate out on a 1/4 scale plane without thread lock.

I installed today 3 metal gear upgrades for DS285 (JRPSG241MG) and the servos seem to work well (did not fly yet, tested them with a servo tester). I had to enlarge the hole in the main gear to fit the potentiometer's shaft but it was not to difficult.

the 241 metal gear set works perfectly for the 285. I converted each of my 285's to the 241 mg

BTW, after upgrading to metal gear, the DS285 feels heavier. It is now 11.5g (without horn and horn screw). JR specifies it as 8.5g (I wonder if the horn and screw are included) so for three servos, its about 10g extra weight.
