Guys,
I am goig to get a new Tx soon - other than an extra channel (that I don't need - I only fly electric helis so 6 is enough so far) is there any good reason to go for a DX7 over a DX6i ??
Cheers,
Mike.

DX7. PERIOD.
You'll want it (or need it) soon or later.

How about a scale fuselage with retracts?
And are you SURE, dead sure, that you won't get a nitro? :)
Personally, I say just get the X9303 and be done with it. :)

I think this is a very good question. I also think that alot of people are afriad to recommend the DX6i because they have already spent the money on a DX7. For someone who will only do electrics, even 600, there is no need for the seventh channel, right? Not counting things like retracts or other "auxillery toys". Is there anything a DX7 can do that DX6i can't programming wise? The DX6i says it does normal and 120 degree ccpm, does this mean it can't do 90 degree. I see that it supports 5 point throttle and pitch curves. No biased DX7 fanboy's please. I would like to see some good honset reviews on the DX6i. I'm looking for a radio for a Trex 450 that will be future proof up to a 600.

Anybody got some real inside on when the DX6i will be shipped. With a release date stated as 4 Jan 2008 I ordered and paid for 2 . Now getting estimated release dates

Horizon now says early Feb.
Several people have reported that the DX6i feels cheap. And went to the DX7 for the better feel. With that, I would really try to get a chance to hold both in my hands before choosing.

Contact JKos thru the forum. I have read a post from him that he has a DX6i. So he may be able to offer some information to construction of the radio and how it feels.

in the 1960's man was sent to the moon , they accurately calculated the landing time ( and place for that matter) and then the return trip , re-entering time , and splashdown , to the nearest minute IIRC.
Why can't Spektrum/Horizon stick to a release date for transmitters , Nov , then Dec , then early JAn, mid Jan, now already early Feb ? please note, not accurate dates but approx dates. Do they employ production engineers and/or project managers - if so, who do they report to?

I went through this with my X9303...
The date on the website is when the next container is due (note that it usually arrives about a week before the date shown). What they don't say, is that the amount of product in the container won't cover the numerous backorders that already exist. This way, you think it'll only be a couple of weeks, so you order one, not realizing the next six containers are already spoken for...:arggg:
Frustrating? Absolutely...
On the original topic, buy the most radio you can afford. Eventually you will want more channels/features. Also, there are usually more mixes/features available as you climb the radio ladder. Personally, I don't think a 7 channel radio should cost nearly twice what a 6 channel radio costs, or double again for a 9 channel, and double again for 12, but what you gonna do?

I have both the dx6i and the dx7 both do about the same thing, The dx7 has 20 model memory where the dx6 has 10, The dx7 has a rechargable batt the dx6 has 4 AA batt. They are about the same size but the dx7 is much heaver i think due to the rechargable batt. The display screen on the dx7 is much larger and much easer to read when setting up. The dx7 looks and feels of higher quality. I like the way the dx6 feels in the hand due to the larger grips on the back. Its kind of like the honda accord and honda accord ex (ex being the dx7) Both get you there one just a little faster and in style.

Production scheduling, R&D glitches, etc.
If they had predicted even the exact month of the moon landing back in the late 50s, then you can compare. But the moon landing is more like saying that your 3 day UPS shipment will be here in 3 days.

Thanks Dilbeck - exactly the kind of info /impression that I was hoping for

The release of a toy controller is far from rocket science.:banana

Actually with the JR/Spektrum line, you get a more substantial case (more metal, heavier plastic), more programming options, better display, better stick/gimbals, as you move up the line. It is not just channels.

Terry,

Why?
I thought I have read that Spektum 2.4ghz radios are being used in the UK. So why would the 9303 on 2.4 not be legal?

According to their web-site it hasn't been tested yet, manufacturers will need to get the equipment re-tested to UK / European standards - for e.g. the permitted output is lower

It feels cheap.
I second that.
I have not played with the DX6i's programming so I really can't comment, but I'd assume the DX7 has more programming features.

I will second the it feels cheap. I was planing on purchasing one on release but he wife got me a dx7 for xmas, yep she is a keeper. Im so glad she did a friend in our rc club got a blade 400 and I got to look at the dx6i. It just felt cheap and big it is way to wide for my liking to each is own but he said he was disapointed in it and i agree just did not feel as solid or as well made as the dx7 it even felt worse or atleast to me as my stock exceed falcon 40 tx and it came with a 85.00 rtf heli.

Go to spectrums website and dowload the manual for the DX6i. It has just as much programming as the DX7. Before preordering (read getting in an invisible line) I read the manual carefully to see if one extra channel and 10 more model memory was worth the extra 150 bucks. I couldn't find any reason other than going to nitro for the DX7. If and when I do get into nitro I will prob bite the bullet and get a good 7 or 9 channel radio. But, until then, I can have a ball with my 450 and a good 6 channel TX like the DX6i.
One other thing....4AA batteries, can you say Energizer rechargables????

Yeah, I was kind of disappointed with how the DX6i came out. Many including myself, were all waiting so long for it with all the excitement and I just got around to checking one out last week at the LHS and I have to say... It looks and feels very cheesy. I turned it on and scrolled through the programing options and they look similar to the DX7 in some ways but the screen seems like it half the size and the data looks more squished on the screen. I have a DX7 in my new Trex v2 and I popped my old DX6 in my dads trex and I can honestly say that I think the DX6 has a more solid, and better quality feel than the DX6i. I am definitely glad that I went with the DX7, (and the Trex450SeV2. The B400 is poop!) =D

I have a dx7, and recently played with a friends 6i. The 6i has all the needed programming features you could ask for in a budget radio. The menu system, display, and roller button dealie are a hundred times better than the original dx6's lame method of programming. It does feel lighter and cheaper, but was plenty comfortable to hold and the sticks feel just fine to me. They are even adjustable for tension. You could get high cap NiMH AA's for it and probably fly for months between charges...
You will have to pay for the nicer "feel", and nicer screen if that's what you want. But these are not needed to control your helis...

Exactly, so if you like quality go for the DX7. DX6i if you do not care for quality. I would poke around and see if there is any programming differences. I do not think there is though. Like others have said.
