View Full Version : Is anyone actually flying 550 blades on the 550?

I have two sets of 500 CF blades with my kit, but I picked up a set of 550 woodies (for raptor 30 ) from my LHS, to do my initial test flights and setup with (much cheaper than the CF ones in case of setup "problems") but they look really long and cumbersome. The blade tip ends just short of the front bolt holding the vertical fin in place. Looking around I cant see anyone else with 550 blades on. Do they increase power consumption significantly, or has everyone found that the 500 blades are better?

I am flying 550 carbons on mine with a jet ranger fuselage
Head speed around 1800
stock 890 Kv motor
2 air thunder 25c lipos
7.5-8.0 mins air time

wow those are good times, what mah packs are those. Do your 550s almost reach the tail rotor?

they are the 2200 Mah
there is nearly 4.5 inches from the main rotor sik to the tail disk ( this is with the long tail boom) lots of clearance

550 Thunder tiger blades CF
Head speed 1630 RPM
Z-power 30A
5S 5350 Flight power
13 minutes of flight time until 80% discharge

13 mins wow what gears are you using(pinion) isn't the Z-30 over kill or would the Z-20 be fine to get that kind of time

Z30 is not an overkill. Tom Viper actualy measured and compared Z20 / Z30, and just hovering at non 3D RPM, Z30 had a fraction less power consumption.
I have 13T on motor shaft, standard 42 and 61T front and main gear.

Thanks for the info
I would go that route but limited space in fuselage Z-30 too tall

Just trim the canopy - you get better air flow over the motor that way anyhow.
Also useful to use a bigger front gear. I use the RevCo 62t but I guess the new Gaui 50t or 60t would help. The larger diameter gear moves the motor further forwards so it clears the control arms better.

would i be able to achieve similar flight times with the rcp 1100kv 1000w motor, with a 5000+mah pack? i'm getting less then 5 minutes with two 2200mah KP's and a 13t pinion, stock gearing.

I can't see why you couldn't reach that flight time. Using 500 blades, you'll get a bit more i guess. One thing, you have to keep in mind is running your heli at lower RPM. Hurricane will hover at 1000, 1600-1700 is economical, 1900+ mild 3D and so on.

i don't have a tach yet, but using readyheli's hs calc with the setup i have now, i'm getting 1680 rpm. but with only 2100 and 2200mah packs (two of each) i'm getting 5 or less minutes. i found a source for loose lipo cells, they come in 2100, 3000, 5000, and 8000 mah caps, and the 5000's are only $15 each. so for a 6s1p 5000mah (well, two 3s1p packs in series) pack i'd only have to spend $90, considering i have all the wiring and deans i'll ever need. that's a good deal.

If you are buying nwe lopos, try taking 5 or 6S in one pack. Doesn't bother you that you have to charge all those packs just to get airborne? Your 4 packs still don't reach my single pack in flight time.

Where can i get those lipos??

one reason, i don't have a charger that will do more then 4 cells, but i've got three chargers that are lipo compatible, and one of them will do two packs simultaneously. two, there are issues (or so i've been told) with fitting the canopy with a big 6 cell pack. three, one big 6 cell pack is alot more crash liability then two 3 or four cell packs. it's possible and even likely that one crash will kill your pack. if there is two, one might survive. four, your flight times with one 6s pack may surpass mine, but i can charge four packs faster then you can charge one. either way this isn't a contest lol.
so with those loose cells that i'll be getting i can custom make packs in any configuration i chose, whatever fits and flys better. here is the site www.truerc.com (http://www.truerc.com/)
but i mistyped it, they are 4000mah cells, still a great deal though.

Not a contest, that 's for sure. I just wanted to point out that you have more work to do after each flight. I had no idea you had 3 chagrers :)
I made an ALU bracket for my lipos and i have since crashed 3 times. Once really, really bad, and the bracked was undamaged. Lipo in there was as safe as a baby.
Picture is just before my first flight with 2x 3S 3700 FP's. Now i only use 5S 5350's.

Hey Phionix
Does that battery configuration shown in the Pic fit under a standard canopy??
looks like a nice idea
Thanks

Bracket pivots around the screw point on the frame. I just trimmed the plastic front and installed the bracket.
Here, from a better point of view.

I had no problems with 2x 3S 3700 or 5S 5350. It all fits inside the canopy.

Ok Great
Your landing gear looks interesting!
Looks a little like the landing gear on an EC120 Colibri.
Any chance of a few more pictures?
I guess you have acces to a sheet metal brake!!

LDG gear was just a test subject. It takes quite some energy. This is what happened when hurricane lost teeth on front main gear. Fall from roughly 8 meters at speed arund 20-25 km/h. I was too late for auto, RPM was way to low.

Replaced the blade, screwed the tail boom bracket back in, straighted LDG gear and the flybar and test flown the bird.
Here is the full bird.

nice work on that for sure. so, a 5s brick will fit under the canopy? hell, i might have to get one and yet another charger! i'd kill for even 10 minute flights.

Yeah, it fits allright. I got me 3 packs and first time i have flown them all, i was tired. I had to pause between second and third pack, but you get use to it.
