Hey guys. I'm a newb to the Trex. Just purchased a new 450 S CF and gyro. I already have a DX7 and all associated receiver, servos for cyclics, battery, etc. My question is, which tail servo would work best with the gy401 without breaking the bank. The wife already is going nuts over the money I've spent so far! Reading this forum over the past 6 months, everyone is using the Futaba 96xx. RC Hover is offering a 3155 for a decent price. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'll just say that skimping on a tail servo is a big mistake, I have seen this at the field time and again and the result is always the same: Tail problems lead to upgrading the servo later. I admit that I even made this mistake myself. Might as well just get it out of the way now, and only buy one servo...

I agree fogger. Just bite the bullet and don't scrimp! I would rather have a rock solid tail than to waste a bunch a cash on junk! :arggg: Wasted enough time and money on cheap toys with crappy electronics.

BTW - great forum and I appreciate all the help from all you guys!

If you really need to save some money at the start, the Hitec HS-81 is a fast servo that is pretty cheap. You a then later upgrade to an S9650 or JR DS3400G or a Futaba S9257.

S9650 is the old standby. The S9257 is the newer faster better tail servo, but it doesn't like 6 volts.

The JR DS3400G is my choice, fast, powerful and is happy on 6 volts.

I've taken this advice to heart. I'm too new to have the tail fly out while I'm trying to learn my basic flying skills. I saw a video on youtube.com with a guy doing slow circuits and his tail went crazy and he had to auto! He only practiced on the sim and fortunately, saved the bird with no damage! :noteworthy I can't say I would be as fortunate.

Good equipment will be one less thing to worry about. I'll look into the JR3400 and ye 'ole standby 9650.

You will be happy you did it right!

Also keep an eye on the event forum, us Florida rotor heads love to get together and hang out and do so several times a year throughout the state. We will have probably two events in Jacksonville alone this year. Its well worth the drive.

You will be happier with the 3400G, but the HS-81 works fine, just doesn't hold the tail as well in hard 3D.

Great Pinecone, thanks! The key to progression for me is focussing on having fun and not on cheap stuff breaking and crashing.

Thanks for help.
I'll keep an eye out for Florida Fly-Ins, too! Watching the 3D stuff is sick!
