View Full Version : How to remove a stripped set screw

Ok, Here is a question for the experts here. To separate the men from the boys...
I have a new (used) MA Spectra-G. Upon disassembly, I noticed the
set-screw that holds the pin which secures the main shaft stripped. So the obvious question is: How do I get it out?
Thanks in advance...

if the driver grabs a bit, but slips place the entire head block in a 350* oven for about 10 minutes. This will deteriorate the locktite, hopefully enough to remove the screw.
You may want to try a small flatblade screwdriver and file/grind it down to catch, or try a TORX T8-T9, sometimes they can be wedged in and back out the screw.

Use a monokote heat gun. The head is aluminum and its to your advantage. Heat it up with the gun (don't use a flame torch!!) as long as possible and it will expand so much that the screw should be easy to turn out. Use an hardened allen screwdriver (those usually fit tighten) and with enough inward force to drag it you should be able to screw it out while nice and hot.
P.S. If you dont have a heat gun, get one. Its an invaluable tool to loosen things like this.

nearly everyone has a need for an oven, not many uses for a heatgun...
Careful with the heatgun too, you may change the hardness of the headblock.
Using the oven you only want to leave it in long enough to heat the aluminum, not the steel components. Aluminum expands faster, so will need less time in the heat.
I would yank the dampners out using either method, heat will deteriorate the rubber components.

allthough i havent tried this on the small screws it has worked several times on larger ones.
- heat using one of the aforementioned techniques
- using a torx (star) driver tap this into the stripped socket and remove

I can advice two options:
- if is not striped completely, use Hudy tool. Since the Hudy's Allen Wrench is slightly bigger, it can help to release the bolt - you can find here http://www.hudy.net/xhudy/products/product_main.php?kategoria=65 and of course, heat it up before you try to turn the bolt.
- if striped completely, use drill sized exactly as is the diameter of striped hole. Drill it till you feel you have touched the pin. When done, use bolt extractors to take the rest of bolt out. Use the heat gun as well. The Hudy tool is very good investment - no striped hex heads in future.

a left handed drill bit might work, or even an easy out. why do they call them easy out's when it is never easy to get out?

Yes, an easy out may work depending on how long the set screw is. Usually an easy out needs a decent length of 'set screw' in order to drill and remove. Another tool is sold by craftsman. Unlike an easy out, you don't have to drill into the setscrew first. The tip of it sort of looks like a drill bit but has a steeper angle. As you turn it counter clock wise, it digs into the head of the setscrew.
