Hi all !

I have a couple of questions regarding the use of a short tail and 475 blades.
Which are the advantages/disadvantages?
Does it make the heli more or less stable?
How does it effect fly times?
Does it make the heli more or less sensetive to wind?

Actually I use the short tail and 500mm blades. Looks nicer. :)

I think the longer tail boom was (is) only really needed if you want to make use of the 550 part of the Hurricane 550 name.

550 mm blades will need the longer boom from what I can see - and you could probably go a bit more - 570 or so.

However, most folks think that the Hurri looks 'odd' with the longer tail boom - it's really a little long for the other dimentions of the heli. I guess it also slows the piro rate down a little so that may be a probelm for some folks.

It is a good option if you plan to run big / heavy packs as it will make getting CofG correct a little easier.

So the only benefit of spending 25-30$ on a tail conversion set is that it pleasures the eye? :)

... or NOT - many people think it looks "wrong" on the Hurri - too long.

I think the only reasons to do it are to use longer blades or to solve a CofG issue.

OK a third might be if you needed extra length for a scale build but that's all I can think of.

i might actually have to use the longer boom to get my cg correct. i'm switching to bigger packs really soon (like when i get my income taxes back) and i know it's going to be an issue, because it balances perfect with 2200's right now. looks to me, aren't that important. it can look like crap but as long as it's steady and balanced, i could care less.

Actually there were some early reports of too much tail power or something, I can't remember exactly, with the long tail. That's why the XES and such come with the short tail.

Not that expensive, you need a tail boom (or cut yours off) a belt and a tail pushrod.

Boom - $5
Tail Pushrod - $2
Belt - $8

I actually had a longer tail boom I ordered as a spare by mistake (and a belt) but when I bent my last one I cut it down... I'd have tried the longer setup only I did not have a pushrod...

Does anyone have the lengths of these booms. I looked at the helidirect CF boom which is 630mm, but my std hurri came with a slightly shorter boom. mine looks more like 570/580 (cant be exact because I cant get the tape at the ends - eyball). Have I got a short one, long one or somewhere in between? (and yes this does invite some jokes, but please stick to the boom!)

[QUOTE][Have I got a short one, long one or somewhere in between/QUOTE]

it's not the size of the boom, it's how you use it. famous words of the full-of-shite lady friend.

the long boom is 630mm and the short boom is 570mm :)

and it's not the size that counts, it's if it works or not that matters lol :D

Wow, so my CF kit came with a short boom?

Yup... so did mone. Not what I expected but I'm not unhappy.

I am not unhappy either, the long one will really look strange to me. Lucky I checked, I would have been mad if I ordered a full sized belt only to find it did not fit later!

Me too on the belt...I have the cf version in a box while I'm flying the plastic frame.

Didn't even realize the CF had a short boom...it's only a few inches shorter, with my style of flying i don't think it really makes any difference and the heli looks fine the way it is, even with the long boom.

But it's good to know in case I need to order parts.
