What are the part numbers for the new grey gears that go into the open tail box?
I don't want to send my box in and have all that down time. Can I change them myself? I have roll pin punches and an arbor press.
Also does anyone know if Rick's carries these?
Thanks,
Jeff

The part number is the same as the old gears. I changed my own, very straight forward and simple to do if you know how to work with roll pins.

Contact MA directly and speak to someone. You should get them free and the gears can pass each other in the mail for less down time. ;)

Thanks David.
Also what is the REAL scoop on the gear mesh with the open box. Do you or don't you have to adjust it when it wears in a bit?
If I change the gears myself would you recommend replacing the roll pins also?

My opinion. I would think after the delrin gears in the open tail box wear in initially. That the mesh would need to be adjusted. I know after a few flights I would take the gear box off and adjust the input gear till the mesh was correct.
I do this with the metal gears, I don't see why the delrin gears would be any different. I would do this where they were machined or molded.
Yes I would replace the roll pins each time I took them out. The new gears come with new roll pins.

Jeff, here is a short cut to my Tips section on my web site. http://www.ericlarsonrc.com/Heli/Equipment/Tips/MATips.htm
The new gears come with new roll pins and yes it is a good idea to replace them also.
All gears have a break in period. Just like the metal gears we use to use in the closed box these gears will seat in during the first few flights. I always went into my metal enclosed box and replaced the grease and readjusted the gear mesh after the first few flight. After that it was good to go.
The new box is the same. When new set the gears just like you would set your crown gear mesh. Snug is ok in a few spots, tight is bad. After a flight or two check the mesh. If necessary adjust it so it is nice and smooth with minimum backlash. I have almost no backlash in the gears and the box is super smooth. After that adjustment I have put around 100 flights on both of my boxes with the new gears and they have not required any further adjustment. I just inspect them before I fly when I get to the field and give them a quick look before I go fly.
I realize the open box is new, so it will take a bit before everyone gets comfortable with setting them up and knowing what is normal.
Hope that helps some,

Thanks Eric.
I just don't want to be down to send it in for replacement.

Called Rick's today and they don't know when they'll get the new gears. Guess I'll call MA tomorrow and see if I can get a set.
Who should I talk to down there?
Thanks,
Jeff
