View Full Version : Unrealistic Effect of Wind in Phoenix

I've been using Phoenix for a few months now, and think it's great. However, I'm still not satisfied with the effect of wind in the simulation when compared with real life, especially for smaller helicopters.

In real life, I fly a Logo 10, and a Compy 300. When I fly my Compy 300 and there is a relatively big gust of wind, the effect on the Compy 300 is very significant, especially for lift, where I will have to lower the pitch to 0 or negative in order to keep the Compy from climbing up significantly. In Phoenix, it seems that wind will just simply push the helicopter backwards/horizontally, but doesn't seem to provide much lift at all.

Just FYI, I have wind set to 3m/s with gusts of 3m/s in the simulator. I never fly without wind in the simulator since that never happens in real life.. :)

What do you guys think?

 First of all you need to realise You are flying SIMULATOR. I'm not defending for Phoenix but if you compare to any other sims on the market Phoenix is way better I guess.Nothing can be perfect.
Real Helicopter pilots fly the SAME TYPE Simulators and they couldn't even make steady hover & Takeoff on sims as they can easily take charge on the real machine. But the advantage of using sim is they can practise some manouevers and emergencies on sim that they can not practically practise on the real machines.

My point is SIMULATORS CAN BE AS CLOSE AS REAL,BUT THEY STILL ARE NOT REAL THINGS!!!:nanabobo

I must agree on the wind issue, wind outside normaly translate to added lift, with wind on Phenix it just feels like the bird is flying true water, added resistance and thats about it. Im not experience with flying in much wind tho, as that usually means I pratice my sim instead of flying outdoor. But I was quick to turn of the wind effects in Pheonix as I was not impressed. Nice to hear other peoples comments on this issue tho.

I agree that a simulator isn't the real thing. However, if no one gives feedback how it actually compares to real life, then how can Phoenix improve their software?

Did you email Phoenix? Feedback here doesn't get things fixed.

I'm trying to get everyone's opinions first before emailing... :) It could be that I'm just too sensitive and everyone else think it's just fine the way it is since I haven't seen anyone else complain about this...

Haven't tried the wind in phoenix yet, but there is also a turbulence setting you can use. have you tried that? might make it more realistic.

Although i think Phoenix is a great Sim..
The wind effect is not realistic enough for me to turn it on.
The description of flying through water is a good one.
The enormous lift effects (especially on a 450 heli) you experience in real life and tail effects/sounds are not there...
In real life you experience all kinds of gusts, falling wind, etc.etc.
Maybe a good thing for the Dev's to start fine-tuning these aspects of simulating our hobby.

I agree , send a note to Phoenix. I usually put wind on, but even IRL its kinda like it is. I know 25mph plus my tic-tocs just like to tic!!!!:lol:

With all this said...because learning/practicing on PhoenixRC now what would be the best wind setting? What is everyone else using OR is everyone just turning off because it's not realistic?

I have to explain RealFlight and then Phoenix to get my unrealistic effect out..

In RealFlight there is something I call the Wylie Coyote effect. You know the carton guy who runs off the cliff but hangs running in mid air before falling. Ok in RealFlight this is horrible. You can be hovering, turn your heli sideways with 0 pitch at 8' or so and count to at least 8. In real life you can get to maybe 1. In Phoenix you can get to 3.

Is this a setting I am missing or maybe I am not as at 0 as I thought? I don't care about RealFlight by the way I mean in Phoenix.
