This was posted on another RC heli forum and my god it works a treat!

I have had no RC experience what so ever and always had trouble thinking of the controls in reverse, be it an RC car coming towards you or a heli

read on and it all comes clear !

"Providing the tail-in hover is pretty much second nature to you get your heli in a steady low hover about 2-3 feet, make sure your heli is trimmed correctly so your not holding any stick to keep the heli still. Now spin the tail round so the heli is facing you, this where things tend to go pear shaped on your first few attempts! This is the simple part,

if the heli drifts to YOUR right push the stick to YOUR right,
if the heli drifts to YOUR left push the stick to YOUR left,
if the heli drifts towards you (this can be scary!) (dont panic!!) pull the stick towards you (back),
if the heli drifts away from you... you guessed it, push the stick away from you (forwards).

This may all sound simple and obvious, but you really have to forget about your instincts that you picked up in learning to hover tail-in and just remember the above rule

(move the stick in the direction the heli starts to travel)."

like it says on the tin!

Another tip that might help is "feed the low side". i.e move, the stick in the direction of the low side of the rotor disk.

What helped me in early on doing nose-in and side-in.... and it sounds ridiculous, is to think or imagine yourself 'inside' or 'behind' the heli the whole time.

After a while the reflexes will be automatic and you won't have to 'imagine' it like that.

I don't think that sounds ridiculous at all. I've always thought the same thing and wish my mind worked like that. I figure it'll all come to me in good time. It's part of the reason even seasoned real heli pilots have problems flying RC.

Countless hours on the sim until I no longer thought about it was what fixed my nose-in issues...
