View Full Version : Gears

I have had three days of good flying. One of my Logos is dialed in perfectly, and was trying to get the other just right. Progress was made on getting the controller and headspeed dialed in, then off to final Vstabi programing for the tail, or so I thought. I had some drive train noises interupt the proccess, swapped the main and the noise went away. Then i had a gear train failure during a hard 3D manuver that shut down the Shulze ESC, almost did a blade stop, but once I got the heli descending at the right attitude and full negative pitch and blades speed back up, had an easy landing. Yes, altitude was my friend. The pictures tell the rest of the story.

HB gear split in two, then split in two? Good save!

So... the pinion split then the gear or what are the thoughts? Man not so sure I want to run the NEU in the one machine anymore, maybe a motor that I can run a higher pinion count....hmmmm
Yikes, +1 to the actro's using the higher tooth count pinions !
Think I'll try and stay away from the 14 tooth and down pinions.

It was a 13T pinion with about 50 flights, maingear started acting funny yesterday. Perhaps the pressed and pinned end was loose for 10 or so flights. The original main gear looks OK, but is the one I changed out today due to a UFFN. Anyhow when the pinion split it locked up the drive train in about 1 revolution. I couldn't hand turn it when I got it down, and was surprised to find pieces still onboard and the two press pins still there.

Darn, I was hoping to use the 12t pinion for my 12s setup...

OMG there must be some serious power ..

It's a little like getting a big 4 wheel drive truck to show off with Daniel. Since I cannot fly worth a cr@p, I feel the need to make up for it with "some serious power". :)

I know you guys will disagree with me, but I find the herringbone gears to be more of a headache than anything. Just from what I've gathered while lingering around here. :flamesuit
The gear type was about the only turnoff I saw with the Logos. Aside from price....I can't afford one.
The gears sure seem quiet in the air but I would constantly be thinking "Is it gonna strip?" while flying. I would probably trade noise for reliability. But not Align turbine noise... :YeaBaby:

Most Logo 600 3Ds are running seriously high power, 10S combined with state of the art motors can produce power peaks close to 4500 watts or 6 HP.
My 8S Logo 600 uses Logo 500 gears without issue. My Trex 600 running 6S regularly strips main gears.
The Logo gear train is infact one of the best.

I think it's really just a pinion gear manufacturing problem and not design of the system.

No no no there my friend, I do not think even once that my gears will strip. And as you stated you do not own one of these machines so saying such things is well,,,, not knowing really. I have had only (1) strip and that was in the beginning when there was only the plastic mount and the .5 main gear and pinions for the 500 3D. I not even see "dust" on any of my gears. The pinions that have stripped, "few but have been" are the 13 tooth with thin wall. It appears or at least to me that big power can shear or take away the bond of the thin walled smaller tooth count pinions.
Personally in the beginning myself I was "extremely" skeptical and quite against the Herringbone Gears and pinions. Now they are simple to mesh, nice and quite and show no wear on the gear train at all, I think it is the smartest design we have seen in gearing period in RC Helicopters. I suggest hanging around more often you will see this is not "that" common across the boards. If you consider how many kits, in the "hundreds" by now there have been very little negative reports of any sort since the metal mounts were made as well the mod.7 gearing became a standard. Cheers.
My biggest concern when I bought this heli was gear failure, so I stocked up on main gears.
I've used exactly 0 of my spare main gears, and I'm really socking the power through these things.

Man...reliability is what these machines are all about. Please don't let a few strange incidences discourage you...you'd be missing out on a GREAT heli.

Oh believe me, if the price wasn't so high I'd be all over one. Herringbone gears and all. :thumbs-up2:
Some day....

Is the price really that much higher than the rest? The only difference is the lack of an ESC and motor from the T-Rex 600, right? $460 vs. $509 at a random store I just checked. I'd think one would be replacing the motor/ESC on the 600 soon after anyway (maybe that's just me...)

I stripped my first mod 0.7 gear the other day, and am stuck waiting on the fedex man to bring my spares :(
I think what hapenned is the tail blades got caught in some grass and the amount of power used to overcome the snag actually twisted the boom about 30 degrees and pulled it in towards the maingear about 5mm. I didn't actually realise until much later that it had stripped the maingear because it didn't make that awful noise that I'm used to and lose power. I think that if the boom hadn't moved I probably could have gone on to fly it and only noticed it when I really loaded up the head.
I can't install the counter-bearing with a 6mm motor shaft, right?

Looks like you power hungry guys need a set of these for your 600.

In the mikado web-site there are two counter-bearings, one for 5mm motor (04134) and another one for 6mm (04148)
JV
hacker motors have a 6mm shaft!
that is the new Mikado Mod 20 herringbone gear with integrated tail drive gear, its not been officially released, where did you get that picture :YeaBaby:

425mm is my limit right now.
