View Full Version : Battery alternatives for the DX7?

I'm dis-satisfied with the battery life on my DX7, frankly I think it stinks.
I would toss a lipo in it but I'm hesitant to do so due to a few reports of transmitter damage and Spektrum does not recommend it.
I've seen a few people solder up their own pack in series using those Panasonic rechargeable ni-mh cells. Anyone doing this?
Any other alternatives?

The only thing I know of is a Lipo. That's what I use in my DX7 and it works great and hardly ever need to charge.... pretty cheap at $30 http://home.comcast.net/~truerc/ready_pack/ready_packs.htm
I'm sure their is something else. I just don't know where you would get them.

I have a 2700 mAH NiMH that I picked up from Discount Hobby Warehouse in San Diego area.
It doesn't self discharge quickly, it has great life. Only downside to the pack I bought is that it didn't come with a JR connector, but those are available.
You can also get 2600mAH packs from Cheap Battery Packs with the proper connector.

JR also sells a 2500 Mah NiMH battery that plugs right in. ive got one in mine and it works great.

You can also do the DE mod to your voltage regulator and double the life of your battery. Downside..... voids your factory warranty.

A buddy of mine uses a Radio Shack battery holder and 8 rayovac hybrid batteries. Very low self discharge, 2000 mAH. He has been using this setup for a while now, no problem at all. If you want to read more about it, search the user Everydayflyer on RCGroups. I am using the same setup on a Futaba 9CHPS.

I just ordered some li-po batteries for my DX7 but I'm concerned about the risk of ruining them if I accidently forget to turn the DX7 off (I already did this once).
Is there an 'auto off' after a time period on the DX7? If not, why not?
Thanks.

You will just have to keep an eye on the voltmeter. You can put a led in it to let you know it is on as well. But the power will last a long time compared to the stock battery or even the 2500mah nimh battery.

How do I put an LED in it? I might put an ultra bright blue LED in it... would be hard to miss that. :)

Something else that you may want to do, not that I suggest doing it, is changing the low voltage alarm in the service menu. I was just reading about this and you can set the voltage that the thing beeps at, it should probably be higher with a lipo.
