All it could have taken was one little rough spot in one place on the threads. That can trash the threads on the other piece, and it goes to hell from there. As you noted, if it isn't screwing down easily on its own, STOP and see what's up before you have to spend a bunch of extra $$ needlessly. There is NO question that the threads on the stock and HD clutches are indeed the same.

When you get the new one, take a wire brush and clean up the neck of the driver assembly as indicated. Add a drop of oil and "dry" thread the new clutch into place. If it spins down effortlessly as it should, pull it back off, clean off the oil, then loctite as directed.

That problem is solved the new HD clutch was much better as far as threads. It screwed right down on there.

Thanks for all the info. BTW the problem was not the bearing going bad or the screws that hold the bearing coming loose. The bearing was actually spinning in the bearing block. I tried to tighten them down once I got it apart and couldn't tighten them anymore. The bearing wore the two screws down along the edges where they hold the bearing in place. This allowed the bearing to have up and down movement.

I now noticed after putting in the new heavy duty clutch and after a few gallons that there is up and down play in the clutch bell and pinion. If you grab the clutch bell then you can move it up and down maybe 1mm.

From the clutch bearing up what is supposed to be inbetween the clutch bearing and the clutch? I have just the conical washer with the taper toward the bearing. Then the clutch and then the oring.

Am I missing something here?

Hi Jeff,

Is the pinion loose in the upper bearing block bearing? That is what is sounds like. The pinion needs to be green loctited into the upper bearing. Once in a while they come loose.
