hi guys, my helidirect/cncheli tail upgrade for my hurricane550 arrived yesterday and while i can't fault the material or workmanship there is one problem, the gaui tail pulley is wider than the gap allowed in the tail box so when assembled the pulley and tailshaft don't rotate freely

i now realise why all the promo pictures don't show it with the tail pulley in place

well now that's two cnc heli upgrades and 2 disappointments, hopefully the cnc heli seesaw works as it's supposed too!

That's why I am waiting for the Gaui CNC tail box. And will order the Gaui CNC seesaw shortly.

I upgraded mine with a full metal tail from Helidirect (mine was probably the very first few that they sold because I ordered mine as soon as I saw the ad on HeliFreak) While I had to open up the old tail unit to get the tail shaft, the metal tail fits and works perfectly. I was also able to remove the extra weight ( a few oz) that I added to the tail to balance mine when I fly with a set of FP 3200 packs. Yesterday, I flied the Hurricane pretty hard, at 2200-2300 rpm for 6 mins doing all the things I that I know how to do. There was no sign of tail kicking at all :)

I am now worry that either my one way bearing or the stock main gear will give out if I keep flying like this :)

Cheers,

Dan

the gaui seesaw fits perfectly and it's a nice piece of kit (i have one on the head of my HV project) i just wanted to try the cncheli version on my short tail hurri, i'll be sure to post how it goes. i wanted to wait for the gaui tail too but it was taking too long and my flying season is fat approaching so i decided to try the cncheli version, but i'm going to have to modify the pulley to make it work.

that's not the gaui tail it's the cnc heli version, the same one i'm posting about ;)

dan i ordered mine on dec 21st, but i presume it's from the same run yours came from so do you have a way of accurately measuring the gap between the tailshaft bearings with the tailcase assembled? if you could that and let me know what it is it would be a way to see if it's a quality control problem in my tailcase or if you just got lucky with yours.

to me it's real suspicious that my pulley doesn't fit and also that the company who makes the upgrades own photos of the parts don't show the pulley in place, even though they obviously had a hurricane on hand to get the boom, fin, tailshaft etc

Hi Phil,

Now I understand what you mean by "the Gaui tail pulley is wider". The Guai tail pulley would never fit in that space Phil. You must use their pulley (which is actually a 3 piece part - 2 cylindrical spacers and a slotted pulley) I will take some close up picture of mine tonight and post it.

I did run into a small problem while disassembling/re-assembling with loctite of the metal tail though. The tip of tail shaft would not slide into the tail blade grip. I used a 600 grit sandpaper and ran it around the tip of the shaft until the metal grip assembly slid in smoothly.

I have 8 solid flights on the new tail already (the weather has been pretty bad here in Northern California too), I must said that this tail unit has been working very good.

if none of the pics showed the tail pulley in place, sounds to me that "they" knew all about it.

thanks for the info dan, where did you get the pulley from as it's not listed on the helidirect or the cncheli website, i look forward to your pics :)

I had the same problem used small washers on the ouside case bolts to space the outer case .5mm out and now eveything seems to be smooth.

I ordered the whole metal tail upgrade from HeliDirect for $82.00. The pulley came with it. Look at the original picture you posted. Mine came exactly like that except the tail output shaft.

Am I missing something? Are we talking about the top pulley that has rails on the side to keep the belt from slipping off?

Mine came without the pulley but I got one from the local hobby shop with 2 Euros and worked like a champ. It would be good to include the pulley and the tail shaft with it as they advert it as full tail system.

no the pulley that goes onto the tailshaft that the belt goes round to make the tailshaft spin, the part that's missing in the pictures in my first post.

mine too came without the tailshaft and pulley but that's ok as that's how it is advertised and i have no problems with that, the only problem i have is the space allowed for the pulley is too small and going by the responses it's a manufacturing problem and not a QC problem on my particular tail set.

mark i'm going the other way as i'm going to sand down the pulley to fit, as i feel using washers as you did will weaken the tailbox as your reducing the mating surfaces to just the washers. i'll post pics of my modified pulley tonight :)

Here are the close up shots Phil. I guess I was lucky because mine has no problem whatsoever.

i wish, i've tried the pulley of of my first hurri which was purchased a year ago, i've tried a replacement pulley i bought about 7 months ago to keep as a spare, and i've tried the one off of my CF hurri that i bought in the readyheli black monday sale and all of them bind, so it's definitely a cnc heli QC problem. but i've already fixed it by sanding down the sides of the pulley to make it work :)

Glad it worked out for you, it's a nice tail.

the tail system is designed with stock tail pulley specs. Plastic tail pulley varies a lot, not as precised as CNC parts. Therefore some are off and some are on spot.

If you measure all the plastic tail pullies they are mostly different. But if you measure tail case they are mostly the same.

The plastic part will vary more than cnc parts.

Is there any advantage over the gaui CF frame (except that it looks to be more of a G10-ish material rather than CF, which some people like)? To me the biggest (only?) issue with the Gaui CF frames is battery options, which this doesn't really solve.
