Well I'm finishing up Trex 450SE V2. Just waiting for Gyro and servo. When the time comes that a crash is going to happen I know your not supposed to slam the "throttle" stick down. I understand this will add negative pitch. Now I am using a JR 6102. It has a throttle cut button on the upper right of the face. Is this what I want to use in a crash? Or do I want to set up throttle hold?
I'm coming from a CX2 and Honey Bee FP.

Do whatever you think you can activate faster... Button or switch.

Doing throttle hold or throttle cut will at the least save your main gear from damage. I almost never hear of a new pilot that was able to cut motor power nanoseconds before impact. :D

Don't go throttle down - collective down. Programe throttle hold or throttle cut (my preference) as you will cause a lot more damage with a negative punch to the ground.

Throttle hold cuts the power (to idle on nitro and off for electric) but still gives you full control with its own pitch curve.

Throttle Cut is used to shut off a nitro motor after flying.

I would say use the Throttle Hold switch, as not all Txes have a Throttle Cut and even if they do, it may been in a different spot.

Fight the crash to the last second. TRY not to do big stick movements. But remember if you are screaming towards the ground with stick "down stick" then "up stick" willl probably put it back in the air.

Throttle hold if you "give up" or have "no idea" what's happening.

Lastly and MOST important.

IF THERE ARE PEOPLE ANYWHERE NEAR THE HELICOPTER... LET IT SMASH IN!!!

My advice is to get used to using idle up right from the start. That way you get in the habit of not slamming the throttle down when in trouble, but instead use the throttle hold/cut. You will eventually need the idle up position so might as well get used to doing it now otherwise you'll develop the habit of slamming the throttle down when in trouble, which is not what you want to do.

After rereading the radio manual I see where throttle cut would be to kill a nitro motor. "Idle up" what exactly is going on in this setting?

that is very good advice. i almost took out a fine looking lady that had stopped to watch me practice. i really didn't even know she was there until the last minute, and if i had punched the throttle/collective to climb out of it, at the angle the heli was at it would have hit her right in the chest. instead, at the last minute i hit throttle hold and it piled itself at her feet. she was cool about it, she even apoligized for "sneaking" up on me although i would not have that- it was my fault and it's my responsibility to be in control and aware of my surroundings at all times. then she went on to say how neat these machines are (she actually said machines, not toys!) and inquired about the cost. once she heard about the $ factor, and that you might spend six months or more just learning to hover in all directions that soured her mood and decided it wasn't a good gift for her boyfriend (damnit, i thought i had something for a second). oh well, my gf would not have been happy had i brought this cutie home for dinner. or, maybe she would have been hehe.

Idle up is where you set the helicopter to have both positive and negative pitch, and the throttle in a V curve so that at full negative you have as much power as you do at full positive pitch.

Go to the Finless Tech Section and the Basic Skills and Setup 101 and find the link (poast #1) to the Pitch/Throtle Curves 101.
